If you’ve ever wished the Litter-Robot 4 came in a “compact edition” for tighter spaces, meet the Litter-Robot EVO. It delivers the same core promise we’ve come to expect from Whisker’s lineup (no scooping, fewer odors, far cleaner floors), but in a slightly smaller, more streamlined package that fits where the LR4 and new LR5 models simply can’t.
I’ve been testing the EVO with my crew, and while it’s technically designed for up to two cats, someone forgot to tell my household. I currently have at least three cats using it regularly—despite the fact that we have two other automatic litter boxes available. Apparently, the EVO is now the cool kids’ bathroom. And honestly? Even with the extra traffic, it’s holding up beautifully.
Let’s dig into what makes the EVO different, where it shines, and a few things worth keeping in mind before you buy.
The most compact self-cleaning litter box from Whisker, perfect for smaller homes or 1–2 cats. The EVO keeps the same reliable automatic scooping, odor control, and Whisker app connectivity you know and love—just in a streamlined design that fits anywhere. Enjoy a cleaner home, fresher air, and less daily maintenance.

How it Compares to Other Litter-Robot Models
Litter-Robot Evo Pros & Cons at a Glance
Let’s do a quick overview of the pros and cons. Then I’ll get into more detail about the biggest features (and the few drawbacks) in my opinion.
Setup & First Impressions
One of the first things I appreciated (and loudly celebrated) is that the Litter-Robot EVO arrives almost completely assembled. All I had to do was attach the step to the waste tray and plug it in. Out of all of the self-cleaning litter boxes I’ve tried (and I think I’m up to at least 10 now), Litter-Robot remains the quickest to put together.
Because it’s smaller, it was also dramatically easier to place. Our laundry room is tiny, and the LR4 has always felt like a very sophisticated house guest who overstays their welcome. The EVO, though? It fits neatly, works beautifully, and even gives us back a bit of floor space.

Real-World Testing: How the EVO Performs in a Multi-Cat Home
One thing I want to mention up front, especially for those who bought one when they first came out and weren’t thrilled: the EVO had some growing pains in the beginning. I was getting a bit frustrated with it myself and on the verge of contacting customer service when I noticed that there was a new firmware update. I ran that and everything has been fine since.
So, if you already have the EVO and are getting a ton of position fault errors, update the firmware. If you buy the EVO, make sure that you run all updates before you start using it.
After testing this out for a couple of months, here’s a rundown of what I love and what I’d change.

Waste Drawer Capacity: Surprisingly Good
I expected the smaller drawer to be an issue. It really isn’t, though. I mean, yeah, it’s smaller but we’re emptying in roughly as often as we empty our other automatic litter boxes, even in a household with 5 cats alternating between this and the downstairs boxes.
I also like how the step attaches to the waste drawer. For one thing, it makes pulling it out easier. For another, it adds a kind of extra layer of protection against odors.

Cycling & Odor Control
The EVO cycles after each use and keeps odors contained. You can change the delay between the time your cat uses it and when it cycles if you want to. Mine is currently set for 7 minutes.
The sealed drawer makes a big difference, especially if you’re placing it in a smaller room without much ventilation, like my laundry room (well, it has the dryer ventilation, but that doesn’t really count).

App Connectivity: Not Perfect
Here’s where I ran into my biggest snag: The EVO disconnects from the app far more often than my LR4. Reconnecting takes multiple attempts. Although I noticed that’s improved significantly since the new firmware update. When it’s connected, the app works well, though.
That said you don’t HAVE to use the app. The EVO will still cycle without any app input. You can also use the panel on the front to cycle the box manually if you ever need to.

The App Itself: Best with a Subscription BUT Still Super Handy Without
I’ve seen a lot of confusion and complaints about the new Whisker subscription and people worrying that Litter-Robot is locking all of the good stuff behind a paywall. That’s not really the case.
Yes, a subscription will give you access to enhanced daily insights, more advanced bathroom habit tracking, the ability to access up to 2 years of data, and other features (depending on the model).
However, with the free version, you still have access to your Litter-Robot’s history. You can see when it was used…you just don’t get to see which cat used it. If you have multiple cats with different weights, though, you can usually figure it out for yourself. The paid version also shows you things like how much your cat peed and how long they were in the litter box.
The free version also lets you download your history (you need to scroll to the end of your current history to see the option). You could use that to keep an ongoing record of your cat’s bathroom habits.
So, Whisker isn’t taking away anything that was already included in the free version before the launch of Whisker+ (and actually, some of these features are new to me). They’re just giving you the option to upgrade for even more insights.

Placement Sensitivity: Needs Work
The EVO is very particular about sitting on a perfectly flat surface. To be fair, most automatic litter boxes do require a hard surface. However, with the LR4, I often tucked the front edge very slightly over a litter mat without issues.
With the EVO? The world ends if a millimeter of that mat creeps underneath. This triggers the position fault error, which stops the unit from cycling. If you have uneven floors or thicker mats, you’ll want to double-check your placement.
It also goes without saying that the EVO won’t work on a carpeted surface. There are ways around that, though. If you want to go the cheapest route, just place down a piece of sturdy plywood and put the EVO on that. Yeah, it’s ugly, but hey, you could always paint the wood to match your carpet. 😀
Final Verdict: Is the Litter-Robot EVO Worth It?
If you’ve always wanted a Litter-Robot but never had the room—or if you’re in an apartment where every square inch counts—the Litter-Robot EVO is an outstanding solution. It gives you true set-it-and-forget-it automation with strong odor control, quiet cycling, and an easy setup… all without demanding the space of a dishwasher.
Just remember to update the firmware to the latest version before using it.
