When the Uproot 7-in-1 Pet Grooming Kit crossed our radar, Jamey and I knew we had to put it to the test on two long-haired cats with very different personalities. She tried it on her majestic fluffball, Milo, while I used it on Alex the Fuzz — my sweet senior cat who’s dealing with vestibular issues and has a hard time grooming himself these days. Keep reading to see what we both love about it, what we’d change, and how to get your cat used to it.
First, though, so we’re all on the same page, this is what we’re talking about:

Before we go any further — we mostly used Jamey’s photos for this one. She takes far better pictures than I do. Mine usually come out funky unless I take them outside because I have the world’s worst lighting and window layout in my house. 😀
What Makes the Uproot Pet Grooming Kit Stand Out
The Uproot isn’t just a plain old cat brush — it’s a 7-in-1 vacuum-powered grooming system that brushes, detangles, desheds, trims, cleans, dries, and vacuums up fur as you go. It’s designed to be quiet (around 52dB on the lowest setting) and gentle, which is a huge plus when you’re working with noise-sensitive cats.

Both Jamey and I loved that it lets you skip the tornado-of-fur aftermath that usually follows a good brushing session. Whether you use it with the vacuum attached or just grab the tools on their own, it really cuts down on the mess.
My Experience with Alex the Fuzz

Alex is a senior cat and, between his age and his vestibular issues, grooming himself has become a challenge. I wanted something that could help me keep up with his coat, get rid of mats, and just help him feel like his old self again.
While the Uproot kit includes a dematting tool that works great, I actually found that the deshedding tool was easier for me to use on him.
The first time I turned the Uproot on, he was absolutely terrified — that wide-eyed, “what in the world is happening” look every cat parent knows. But after a few short sessions, something shifted. Now, he actually loves it. (I’ll explained what changed below when we talk tips on getting your cat used to it).
His favorite tool is the regular brush — I think it feels like a gentle massage for him. I’ll start with the deshedding or dematting tools to handle the heavier tangles, then switch to the brush once he starts to get impatient.

The difference in his coat has been amazing — it’s softer, smoother, and he just looks more like his handsome old self again. But even more than that, he seems happier. I think taking over some of the grooming duties for him gave him a confidence boost. He’s grooming himself again — not obsessively like before, but more of a “maintenance mode,” which tells me he’s comfortable and content. For an older cat with health issues, that’s a big deal.
Jamey’s Experience with Milo

Jamey’s cat Milo is younger, fluffier, and let’s just say… a little more dramatic about grooming. Her favorite attachment is the deshedding tool, and in her words:
“I’m obsessed with the deshedding tool that came in the kit. I’ve never had such an easy time brushing Milo and getting so much fur off in seconds. AND I’ve noticed since I started using it, Milo is hardly throwing up or having hairballs (it used to be almost daily before). Now, I can’t use the actual vacuum while I’m brushing because it freaks him out, so I just use the tool and vacuum up the fur afterward. I could make another cat with all the fur I’m getting. That photo is from less than one minute of using the tool!”

And honestly, she’s not exaggerating. You could absolutely knit a small blanket from that pile of fur. (We won’t, but you could.)
What We Both Love About It
✅ Quiet enough for most cats – It’s way quieter than a traditional vacuum, though some cats will still need time to get used to it.
✅ Mess-free cleanup – Even when you use the tools without the vacuum on, the fur tends to stay contained and easy to clean up.
✅ Multi-pet friendly – Works great across dogs and cats, so you don’t need separate kits for each pet. Check out my review of the Uproot Pet Grooming Kit for dogs over on TechnoBark.
✅ Real results – Less shedding, fewer mats, and in Milo’s case, way fewer hairballs.
Things to Keep in Mind

Honestly, there are very few things that I don’t love about the Uproot Pet Grooming Vacuum (and it’s incredibly rare for me to say that). It’s a really stellar machine that is definitely getting A LOT of use in both our homes.
As far as “wish list” items go, both Jamey and I do wish the hose was a little longer. As you can see in the pic above, it’s not short-short, but when your cats are nervous to start with you really want as much distance between them and the vacuum as possible.
The only other big thing to consider is how your cats will react. While the Uproot is impressively quiet, cats can be creatures of habit — and any new gadget can take time to warm up to.
Once they realize the tools actually feel good, they’ll come around. Alex went from terrified to total spa-day enthusiast, so there’s hope for even the most skeptical kitties.
How to Help Your Cat Get Used to the Uproot Grooming Kit
If your cat takes one look at the Uproot and bolts under the bed, don’t worry — that’s normal. Even though it’s much quieter than a traditional vacuum, it can still be a little intimidating at first.
The trick is to go slow and make it a positive experience from the start. Here’s what worked for me with Alex the Fuzz (who went from “absolutely not” to “purrs of approval” in no time at all):
- Start with the tool alone.
Don’t even attach it to the vacuum yet. Just use the brush, deshedder, or dematting tool by hand so your cat gets used to the feel of it. - Add the vacuum — but keep it off.
Once your cat is okay with the tool, attach the hose but don’t turn the vacuum on yet. Let them see it and sniff it. Basically, make the vacuum part boring. - Introduce the sound slowly.
Next, keeping the vacuum as far away from your cat as the hose allows, turn it on to the lowest setting. Work your way up gradually. You honestly don’t need it on high — it still works great on lower suction. - Go at their pace.
If your cat starts to look nervous, stop and try again later. Cats like to think things are their idea, so let them set the tone.
A Few More Tips from Experience
So, I have to be totally honest here. I handled the first test run in the worst way possible and ended up getting scratched by one cat, glared at by another, and peed on by Alex. Here’s what I did wrong (in the DON’TS) and how to actually do it right:
❌ Don’t wake your cat up from a nap, scoop them into the bathroom, and start vacuuming without so much as a “how do you do?” That’s a fast track to resentment (and possibly claws).
❌ Don’t chase them around the room emphatically saying, “I just need one good picture! Come back! Seriously, it’s all okay! Why are you running???” (Ask me how I know.)
✅ Do go to your cat instead. Wait until they’re relaxed but awake, and follow the steps above.
✅ Use treats — the good kind. I highly recommend lickable cat treats because they last longer than crunchy ones and keep your cat distracted while you work.
With patience, a calm voice, and maybe a little bribery, most cats will come around. Alex now trots over when I pull out the Uproot — though, full disclosure, he still expects treats afterward.
Final Thoughts
For both of us, the Uproot Pet Grooming Kit has become a regular part of our cats’ care routine. It’s versatile enough for long-haired cats like Milo and gentle enough for seniors like Alex the Fuzz. Whether you use the full vacuum system or just the tools on their own, it helps keep your cat’s coat healthy and your house fur-free — no salon required.
If you’re tired of chasing tumbleweeds of fur or trying to gently untangle mats with a brush that your cat hates, this kit is 100% worth a look. Just be prepared to take way too many before-and-after photos… preferably ones that aren’t blurry like mine.
