Every six to eight weeks, a 28 lb box of Arm & Hammer comes home with me. That box, a carbon filter a month and the odd liner are the entire running bill for Milo’s Litter-Robot 5 Pro, and until recently I’d never actually added it up. Like most people, the only number I’d ever really thought about was the Litter-Robot price on the tag: $599 to $899, depending on the model.
So I finally sat down with the receipts. What surprised me wasn’t the upfront cost. It was how little it takes to keep one running, and how long these machines tend to stick around once they’re in the house.
Milo is 13 now, and he had some health challenges this past summer. His Litter-Robot helped me keep track of what was going on with him day to day, including when I wasn’t home. You can’t put a price on that, and plenty of other owners say their Litter-Robot caught something early too.
Everything else, though, I can put a price on. Here are three years of running costs for every current model, my own numbers, how they compare to scooping, how long these machines last, and two ways to pay that most people never hear about: HSA/FSA funds and 0% financing.
FYI, if you shop through our links, we earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
What “Cost of Ownership” Means for a Litter-Robot
The total cost of ownership for a Litter-Robot is the purchase price plus everything needed to keep it running, spread across the months you own it. That includes three recurring consumables (litter, waste drawer liners and carbon filters) and a handful of optional extras: an extended warranty, a Whisker+ membership and accessories like a ramp or mat.
Monthly cost is the total divided by the number of months. The longer the machine lasts, the lower that figure gets, because the purchase price is spread thinner while the running costs stay roughly flat.
The Sticker Price: Where Each Model Starts
There are four current Litter-Robot models. Each step up adds capacity or smarts (and $100).

Whisker also sells bundles that include the extended warranty, liners, a mat or a bag of litter. If you know you want those extras, a bundle usually beats buying them one at a time.
The Receipt: Everything You Buy After the Box Arrives
These are Whisker’s list prices for one cat, before any autoship discount.
| Item | Price (US) | How often | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clumping litter | Any brand works | Top up as needed, full change every month or two | About $12 |
| Waste drawer liners | $35 for 50 (70 cents each) | Each time you empty the drawer, roughly every 7 to 10 days | About $2.80 |
| Carbon filters | $55 for 12 | Monthly, per Whisker | About $4.58 |
| Running total | About $19.40 |
The optional extras
- WhiskerCare extended warranty: about $100 to $129, one time. Every Litter-Robot already includes one year of coverage; this stretches it to three.
- Whisker+ membership: $79.90 a year or $7.99 a month. Adds up to two years of activity history, deeper insights and unlimited video on camera models. Weight tracking and cat ID stay free without it.
- Ramp: $65, one-time. Handy for seniors and small cats, and it cuts down on tracking.
- LitterTrap mat: $50, one-time.
- OdorTrap packs: from $15. An optional boost for odor control in the drawer.
None of these are required to run the machine. They’re the “nice to have” column, and plenty of owners never buy any of them.
Milo’s Real Numbers
Models are useful. Receipts are better. Here’s what my sweet Balinese actually costs me.
- Litter: I use Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal, and one 12.7 kg (28 lb) box lasts six to eight weeks. At about $27 Canadian a box, that’s roughly $12 US a month.
- Liners: I don’t swap the liner every time I empty the drawer. I tip the waste into a plastic bag, give the drawer liner a quick wipe and reuse it, then change it every few emptyings. That works out to about one liner a month.
- Smell insurance: a light sprinkle of Arm & Hammer baking soda in the liner. A box costs a couple of dollars and lasts ages.
- Carbon filter: monthly, as Whisker recommends.
All in, Milo’s running costs land around $17 a month. Over three years on his Litter-Robot 5 Pro, that’s about $1,524 total, or roughly $42 a month. Stretch it to eight years and it falls to about $27 a month.
And honestly? I don’t notice any extra smell from the liner routine. The baking soda more than earns its two dollars.
The 3-Year Math: Litter-Robot vs. Scooping
This is the comparison most people actually want. A Litter-Robot 4 costs more upfront than a plastic box and a scoop, no surprises there. The interesting part is how much of that gap the running costs win back, and that depends almost entirely on how much litter you save.
Whisker says owners report using up to 50% less litter, and an independent test it commissioned measured 63% less than two traditional boxes. Your results will depend on your litter and your cats, so the table shows two versions: a middle-ground 30% saving and Whisker’s “half as much” figure.
| Cats | Regular Scoop boxes | Litter-Robot 4 (30% less litter) | Litter-Robot 4 (half the litter) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 cat | $748 | $1,343 | $1,235 |
| 2 cats | $1,338 | $1,822 | $1,606 |
| 3 cats | $1,928 | $2,300 | $1,976 |
Look at the three-cat row. At Whisker’s litter figure, three years with a Litter-Robot 4 costs almost exactly the same as scooping four boxes. You’d be paying about $48 extra for three years of never scooping.
Now stretch it to eight years, which is closer to how long these machines actually run. At the half-litter rate, a two-cat home comes out about $450 ahead of scooping, and a three-cat home about $1,000 ahead. Even at the 30% rate, a three-cat home comes out about $170 ahead, and a two-cat home is only around $125 behind.
What this comes down to: the more cats you have, the faster a Litter-Robot closes the gap. In a multi-cat home it can pay for itself in litter alone. In a one-cat home it costs a little more, and what you’re really buying is time.
A Real Six-Cat Household
Want to skip the trips entirely? Whisker delivers litter on autoship at 30% off, and most big pet retailers offer something similar. To be fair, plenty of people grab litter on a regular grocery run, so not every trip is a special one. The lifting and carrying still counts, though.
Our editor Nikki shares her home with six cats, so when she read an early draft of this article, she sent me her own numbers. Since switching to the Litter-Robot 5, her household spends about $25 a month on litter, or closer to $35 in months when she buys Fresh Step instead of her usual ScoopAway 3-pack. Before that, she spent at least twice as much because so much clean litter went out with every scoop. You can read Nikki’s Litter-Robot 5 Review here.
That works out to roughly $4 to $6 per cat each month, a third to half of the $12 per cat I’ve used in this article, and a litter saving of 50% or more. So her real-world bill comes in even cheaper than the numbers in the table above. In a busy multi-cat home, the “half the litter” column isn’t optimistic. It may be the conservative one.

What You’re Really Buying: Your Time Back
Scooping one box takes three to five minutes a day once you count finding the scoop, bagging it and walking it to the bin. Add a monthly full dump and scrub, and three years of scooping adds up to roughly 67 to 103 hours.
With a Litter-Robot, you empty a drawer about once a week and do a deeper clean every few months. That’s around 11 hours over the same three years.
So a one-cat home saves somewhere between 56 and 92 hours. Divide the one-cat price gap by those hours and you’re paying roughly $5 to $11 for every hour of scooping you never do. I can’t think of another chore I’d happily outsource at that rate.
That’s before the things you can’t price, like the smell that never builds up, the weight tracking that flags changes early and not having to arrange a scooping sitter when you go away for the weekend.
The Store Runs You Can Skip
There’s one more cost that never shows up on a receipt: the trips to buy litter. Using less litter means fewer heavy boxes to pick up, lug to the car, and haul back into the house.
Whisker puts a typical scooped box at about one 20 lb bag of litter per cat each month. If you pick up one 28 lb box per trip, here’s roughly how many store runs that adds up to over three years.
| Cats | Regular Scoop boxes | Litter-Robot (30% less litter) | Litter-Robot (half the litter) | Trips saved |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 cat | 26 | 18 | 13 | 8 to 13 |
| 2 cats | 51 | 36 | 26 | 15 to 26 |
| 3 cats | 77 | 54 | 39 | 23 to 39 |
- Time: at 30 to 45 minutes a run, that’s roughly 4 to 10 hours back with one cat and 12 to 29 hours with three, on top of the scooping time above.
- Gas: a 10-mile round trip at 25 mpg costs about $1.30 at $3.25 a gallon, so the fuel saving lands somewhere around $10 to $50 over three years, depending on how many cats you have. Small, but it’s money you don’t spend. P.S. If you’re a Canadian like me, you know you’re spending a lot more on gas than this!
- Your back: that’s 215 to 1,080 fewer pounds of litter lifted, carried and poured over three years. For anyone with limited mobility, that may matter more than the money.
How Long Does a Litter-Robot Last?
Long enough to change the math completely. Owners in the Litter-Robot community report six, seven and eight years of daily use from the older Litter-Robot 3, usually with a part or two replaced along the way. The Litter-Robot 4 launched in 2022, and owners at three and four years describe theirs as still going strong.
Part of the reason is that Whisker sells nearly every part: bases, motors, globes, bonnets, drawers, sensors and seal strips, and keeps selling them after the warranty ends. Every machine comes with one year of WhiskerCare coverage, extendable to three, including accidental damage, with free shipping both ways and no deductibles.
Here’s what that does to the monthly cost. These are all-in numbers for one cat: machine, litter, liners and filters.
| Model | Over 3 years | Over 5 years | Over 8 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Litter-Robot EVO | $36.02 | $29.37 | $25.62 |
| Litter-Robot 4 | $38.80 | $31.03 | $26.66 |
| Litter-Robot 5 | $41.58 | $32.70 | $27.71 |
| Litter-Robot 5 Pro | $44.36 | $34.37 | $28.75 |
Assumes $12 a month in litter, four liners a month and a monthly carbon filter. Your costs drop further with autoship pricing or the liner trick above. Notice how close the four models get by year eight. The gap between the EVO and the 5 Pro shrinks to about $3 a month, which is worth remembering if you’re torn between models.
Six Ways to Bring the Running Costs Down
- Use autoship. Whisker takes 30% off liners, filters and litter on autoship. On the running costs above, that’s a few dollars a month back.
- Top up, don’t dump. You only add litter when it drops below the fill line, then do a full change every month or two. That’s where most of the litter saving comes from.
- Stretch your liners. Reuse them for a few emptyings (see Milo’s routine), or use ordinary 13-gallon bags, which many owners swear by.
- Buy filters in the 12-pack. It works out cheaper per filter, and the 6-pack goes on sale at big retailers fairly often.
- Skip Whisker+ unless you want it. Weight tracking and cat ID stay free. If you do subscribe, one membership covers every compatible Litter-Robot in your home.
- Decide on the warranty in year one. The extended WhiskerCare plan can only be added within the first year.

Paying With HSA or FSA Funds
Here’s the one that surprises people. Litter-Robot is the first automatic litter box eligible for HSA and FSA spending, which means qualifying US buyers can pay with pre-tax health dollars.
How it works
- Eligible models: Litter-Robot EVO, 4, 5 and 5 Pro, plus the Feeder-Robot and Whisker’s HSA/FSA bundles.
- What you need: a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). Whisker partners with a health-payments provider that handles it at checkout, and Whisker covers the LMN fee.
- Qualifying conditions include chronic back pain, arthritis, muscle weakness, mobility challenges, vision loss, pregnancy, toxoplasmosis, allergies, respiratory conditions, nervous system disorders and mental health conditions.
For a lot of people, this is the difference between “someday” and “now.” One owner in the Litter-Robot community described buying for a household where a partner had just had a kidney transplant: the box was a health decision first, and the budget was tight. That’s exactly who this eligibility is for.
What it does to the real price
Paying with pre-tax money means you skip the income tax you’d otherwise pay on those dollars. Here’s the federal saving alone, by tax bracket:
| Model | 22% bracket | 24% bracket | 32% bracket | 37% bracket |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Litter-Robot EVO ($599) | $132 | $144 | $192 | $222 |
| Litter-Robot 4 ($699) | $154 | $168 | $224 | $259 |
| Litter-Robot 5 ($799) | $176 | $192 | $256 | $296 |
| Litter-Robot 5 Pro ($899) | $198 | $216 | $288 | $333 |
On a one-cat Litter-Robot 4, that knocks a solid chunk off the three-year gap with scooping, often a third or more.
Eligibility and medical necessity are between you and your healthcare provider, so if you’re unsure whether you qualify, start that conversation with them. HSAs and FSAs are US accounts, so this one doesn’t apply to my fellow Canadians.
Paying Over Time With Affirm
If spreading the cost suits you better than paying it upfront, Whisker partners with Affirm for financing.
- 0% APR on eligible products in Whisker’s pay-over-time category. Other purchases are financed at rates based on eligibility.
- Terms of 3, 6, 12 or 18 months, with a real-time decision after a soft credit check.
- No deferred interest or hidden fees. The total Affirm shows you is what you pay.
- The 90-day in-home trial still applies. If you return it, you’re refunded the payments you’ve made, minus any interest.
At 0%, a $699 Litter-Robot 4 over 12 months works out to about $58 a month. That’s a year of payments on a machine owners keep for six to eight years.
Who a Litter-Robot Pays Off Fastest For
- You have two or more cats. Litter savings scale with every cat.
- Scooping is physically hard for you. And HSA/FSA funds may cover it.
- You plan to keep it for years. By year eight, every model is under $29 a month.
- You travel or work long days. The box stays clean whether you’re home or not.
- You have one cat and don’t mind scooping. The payoff is mostly time and smell, not dollars.
- You buy every optional extra on day one. Start with the machine and add only what you miss.
- Your litter use barely drops. The top-up routine and a good clumping litter make the difference.
Pays off fastest if: you have two or more cats, scooping is physically hard for you, you plan to keep it for years or you’re often away from home.
Takes a little longer if: you have one cat and genuinely don’t mind scooping, you buy every extra on day one or your litter use barely drops.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Litter-Robot cost per month?
Including the machine, litter, liners and filters, a Litter-Robot 4 with one cat costs about $34 to $37 a month over three years and about $27 a month over eight years. Running costs on their own are around $19 a month for one cat, and less with autoship or reused liners.
What are the ongoing costs of a Litter-Robot?
Three things: clumping litter (about $12 a month per cat), waste drawer liners (about $2.80 a month for one cat at list price) and a carbon filter (about $4.58 a month). An extended warranty, Whisker+ and accessories are optional.
Does a Litter-Robot really save on litter?
Yes, because it sifts out only the clumps and you top up rather than dumping the whole box. Whisker says owners report up to 50% less litter, and an independent test it commissioned measured 63% less than two traditional boxes. Savings vary with the litter you use and how many cats you have.
Can I use regular trash bags instead of Litter-Robot liners?
Many owners use ordinary 13-gallon bags, and with one cat you can reuse a liner a few times by tipping the waste into a separate bag. Whisker’s white liners do help the drawer-level sensor read more accurately, so switch back if your drawer readings get unreliable.
Do I need Whisker+ to use a Litter-Robot?
No. Every Litter-Robot works without a subscription, and weight tracking and cat ID stay free. Whisker+ ($79.90 a year) adds longer activity history, deeper insights and unlimited video on camera models. One membership covers every compatible unit in your home.
Is the Litter-Robot extended warranty worth it?
For most owners, yes. WhiskerCare costs about $100 to $129 and extends coverage to three years total, including accidental damage, with free shipping both ways and no deductibles. It has to be added within the first year.
Can I buy a Litter-Robot with HSA or FSA money?
Yes, if you qualify. The EVO, 4, 5 and 5 Pro are eligible with a Letter of Medical Necessity, which Whisker’s checkout partner arranges and Whisker pays for. Depending on your tax bracket, that saves roughly $130 to $330 in federal tax alone.
How long does a Litter-Robot last?
Owners report six to eight years of daily use from the older Litter-Robot 3, and Litter-Robot 4 owners at three and four years describe theirs as still going strong. Because Whisker sells nearly every part, lifespan depends more on maintenance than on a fixed limit.
Is a Litter-Robot worth it for one cat?
It costs a bit more than scooping over three years, roughly $490 to $600 more for a Litter-Robot 4. What you get for that is 56 to 92 hours of scooping you never do, better odor control and weight tracking. Over eight years, the gap narrows to between about $130 and $420.
Is a Litter-Robot safe for kittens?
Kittens weighing 3 lbs or more can use the EVO, Litter-Robot 4 and Litter-Robot 5 in automatic mode, according to Whisker. Below that weight, run it in semi-automatic mode and cycle it manually after use.
Final Thoughts
When I first looked at the Litter-Robot price, I was thinking about it the way you think about a litter box. That was the mistake. It’s an appliance, and like a dishwasher, the real cost only makes sense over the years you use it.
Spread over a realistic lifespan, a Litter-Robot costs about the same per month as a streaming subscription. In a multi-cat home it can match or beat the cost of scooping. In a one-cat home like mine, it costs a little more, and I get dozens of hours back, a house that doesn’t smell like I have a cat, and a steady read on Milo’s weight, even when I’m half an hour away at the lake.
If the upfront number is what’s holding you back, look at the HSA/FSA route and 0% financing before you decide. And whichever model you choose, the six cost-cutting habits above will keep the running costs closer to Milo’s $17 a month than the list-price $19.
At 13, knowing Milo’s weight is holding steady, from wherever I happen to be, matters more to me than any number in this article. It just helps that the numbers work out too.
