If your Litter-Robot 3 has been humming away since roughly 2018, you’ve probably had the thought. Usually right after it stops halfway through a cycle and blinks yellow at you like you did something wrong. Is this the year it finally gets replaced? Or is it just being dramatic again?
Honest starting point: I don’t own an LR3. I live with a Litter-Robot 5 Pro, and so does Milo, my 13-year-old Balinese, who met it by walking a slow lap around the base, stretching up to inspect the top and then peering into the globe with the energy of a home inspector who has notes. So for the Litter-Robot 3 vs 5 question, I went to the people who actually own LR3s.
That turned out to be a lot of people. Some are running six, seven and eight-year-old machines. Some upgraded and wrote down exactly what surprised them. Here’s what they taught me: how long an LR3 really lasts, how to tell when yours is on borrowed time, the LR5 things upgraders didn’t expect to love, and the one situation where your old LR3 might actually be the better box.
Most upgrade advice is a spec sheet. This is what real LR3 owners noticed after they switched, plus what they wish they’d checked first.

What’s Actually Different Between the Litter-Robot 3 and Litter-Robot 5?
The Litter-Robot 3 is a discontinued self-cleaning litter box that rotates its globe to sift waste into a drawer, triggered by a weight-based cat sensor. The Connect version adds WiFi for drawer-full alerts and remote cycling, but it has no built-in scale. The Litter-Robot 5 uses the same rotating-globe idea and adds a scale that weighs each cat, quieter cycling, a sealed waste drawer, an on-unit LCD screen and urine-versus-stool detection called WasteID. It’s rated for up to five cats between 3 and 30 pounds.
In plain English, the differences that actually change your day:
- Noise: the LR3 has an audible mechanical hum. The LR5 uses QuietSift, and most owners say they barely hear it.
- Odor: the LR5’s drawer is sealed, with a multi-layer carbon filter. The LR3’s drawer is enclosed but not sealed.
- Emptying: Whisker says one cat can go about 10 days between drawer emptyings on the LR5.
- Health data: the LR5 weighs your cat on every visit and logs who went and what they did. The LR3 can’t do this at all.
- Safety sensing: the LR5 combines weight and optical sensors and pauses the moment a cat approaches the step.
- The screen: the LR5 tells you what’s going on in actual words, which is a refreshing change from decoding blinking lights.

How Long Does a Litter-Robot 3 Actually Last?
Most well-kept Litter-Robot 3s last six to eight years, and plenty are still going past that. That’s not marketing. It’s what owners of a machine Whisker doesn’t even sell anymore keep reporting, which is exactly why I believe it.
“We had the Litter Robot 3 for 7 years. It was the best investment we could possibly have made.” (r/litterrobot owner)
“Our 2 cats have been using the LR3 for about 8 years now.” (r/litterrobot owner)
“I’ve had the LR3 for 6 years now and she’s been kicking quite well.” (LR3 owner weighing an upgrade)
My favorite was the owner who has had every generation, from the original Litter-Robot through the 1, 2, 2 Bubble, 3 and 4, and casually mentioned that the LR3 still works perfectly.
The other half of the story is that LR3s are repairable, as long as you’re handy with a screwdriver. Whisker still sells nearly every LR3 part on its Litter-Robot parts page, from a $5 pinch contact and $48 motor all the way up to a complete $349 base, with DIY install guides and videos. Owners talk about replacing a motor around year two or four and carrying right on. One family replaced the base after year six and kept going.
What Whisker doesn’t do anymore is fix it for you. There’s no extended warranty for the LR3, and Whisker doesn’t offer out-of-warranty repairs on any model. So keeping an LR3 alive is a DIY project now. Not a hard one, for the most part. But it’s yours.
If you want the full math on that, I broke down what a Litter-Robot really costs over three years and how long it lasts, including which parts wear out first.
And here’s the part nobody puts on the box: a lot of LR3 “failures” in owner posts turned out to be cleaning problems. Stray litter packed into the base. Dusty sensors. Grimy contacts. The machine wasn’t dying. It just needed a really good scrub.
Before you decide your LR3 is done, give it a full deep clean, including vacuuming stray litter out of the base and wiping the pinch contacts and drawer sensors. A surprising number of “it’s dead” stories end with “never mind, it was litter in the base.” Use Whisker’s official LR3 deep-clean guide so you don’t skip a step.
Never done a full teardown before? The Litter-Robot deep clean nobody taught you walks through it step by step, including the hidden carbon filter almost everyone misses.
Is My Litter-Robot 3 on Borrowed Time? The Signs to Watch
Your LR3 is on borrowed time when problems keep coming back after a proper clean and a fresh part, or when the fix would cost more than the machine is really worth to you. One bad night doesn’t count, but a pattern does. Here’s how owners sort the “clean it” problems from the “start shopping” ones:
| What you’re seeing | What it usually means | Clean, repair or replace? |
|---|---|---|
| Stops mid-cycle, blinking yellow | Dirty pinch contacts or cat sensor, or litter under the globe | Clean first. Pinch contacts are an inexpensive part |
| Says the drawer is full when it isn’t | Dusty drawer-full sensors | Clean the sensors |
| Smells, even with a fresh carbon filter | Worn seal strips or an overdue filter | Replace the seal strips and filter |
| Clumps glued to the globe after a deep clean | The liner’s non-stick coating has worn off | Replace the globe liner |
| Grinding, slow turning or repeated overload faults | Motor wear | Replace the motor; owners do this themselves |
| Faults that return after cleaning and new parts | Base or circuit board trouble | A new base is $349 and a board is $85, so compare that with an upgrade |
My rule of thumb, after reading way too many of these threads: if the fix is one smallish part and everything else is solid, repair it. A $48 motor on an otherwise healthy machine is a bargain. A $349 base is a different conversation. That’s more than halfway to a $599 EVO, which comes with a full warranty, a scale and a quieter cycle. If you’re pricing a base, or it’s the second big repair in a year, that money is probably better spent on a new machine.
One more thing worth knowing: the LR3 parts have moved off Whisker’s main shop and now live on its Litter-Robot parts page. They’re still in stock today, but this is a discontinued machine, and parts for discontinued machines don’t last forever. That’s the real clock on an LR3, more than any blinking light.
7 Things LR3 Upgraders Didn’t Expect to Love About the Litter-Robot 5
Every review lists the features. The more convincing part is the sentence that starts with “I didn’t expect…” These are the ones LR3 owners keep coming back to, plus a few from my own house.
1. It’s genuinely quiet
This is the one upgraders mention first, almost every time. In one independent test, the LR3 Connect averaged around 60 to 62 dBA during its sifting cycle. The LR5’s QuietSift is a different experience.
“It is a loud little bugger.” (6-year LR3 owner, on why they were considering an upgrade)
“It’s sooo quiet. Except for the occasional pop from the chassis, it’s pretty silent.” (LR3 to LR5 Pro upgrader)
In my house, the cycle is so low-key that Milo treats it as light entertainment rather than something to be scared of. He found the spinning genuinely interesting. Possibly a little too interesting, but we’ll get to that.
2. The smell stops instead of just shrinking
The LR3 controls odor pretty well. Upgraders say the LR5 makes it disappear, and one owner credited the filter’s placement under the globe for absorbing the stink better than the odor packs they’d bought separately.
My own routine is very unglamorous: Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal in the globe and a sprinkle of baking soda in the drawer liner. I dump the drawer into a bag, wipe it out and only swap the liner every few emptyings. No smell. I keep sniffing for it out of habit, like it’s hiding somewhere.
3. It stops the moment a paw touches the step
This one is sneaky. One LR3 owner’s main reason for upgrading was that their cat would jump in mid-cycle and trigger an overload fault. They once had to send a friend over to reset it while they were 1,400 miles away. (Every LR3 owner reading this just nodded.)
On the LR5, the cycle pauses as soon as a cat steps up. The same owner said their cat had always loved batting his waste around during cycles, and once the machine stopped moving, he stopped doing it. A safety feature that turned into a behavior fix. Nobody markets it that way.
4. Fewer trips to the drawer
Whisker says one cat can go about 10 days between emptyings on the LR5, thanks to a bigger drawer that spreads the waste out more efficiently. If your LR3 routine involves emptying every couple of days in a multi-cat house, this one adds up fast.
5. You can feel the build quality
A long-time owner unboxing the LR5 Pro wrote a post that got hundreds of upvotes, basically saying you can feel the step up. The unit is heavier, the bonnet is sturdier, the tip guard is built into the back and the fence has higher edges on each side to keep things from leaking out.
6. The front is kinder to senior cats
This is the most concrete upgrade reason I found, and it came from an LR4 owner, but it applies to anyone with an older cat. Their senior cat had arthritis and couldn’t comfortably step over the fence. Without the fence, she peed right at the front edge and soaked the metal strips there. The LR5’s redesigned front fixed it.
“Hope this helps someone who is thinking of upgrading.” (owner who switched for a senior cat with arthritis)
With Milo at 13, this one hits close to home. Older cats change how they squat and how high they’re willing to step, and those small changes matter a lot in a litter box.
7. You start actually noticing your cat
This is the one thing an LR3 simply can’t do. The LR5 weighs every cat on every visit and logs how often they go. Most days that’s mildly interesting. Some days it matters a lot.
Two different owners caught a urinary blockage early because the app showed their cat suddenly making repeated trips. Both cats needed emergency vet care, and in one case the vet said the quick action saved his life. A blocked male cat can become critical fast, so that kind of early warning isn’t a gimmick. (They’re not the only ones. Seven owners told us their Litter-Robot caught an illness first.)
I leaned on this myself when Milo had some health challenges this summer. Being able to look at his visits and weight instead of guessing from memory made those vet conversations a lot easier. I wrote about that in my Litter-Robot 5 Pro review.

One thing to know going in: day-to-day weight tracking and visit logs are free in the Whisker app. Longer-term history, deeper trends and some LR5 Pro camera features need a Whisker+ membership, which owners report at about $7.99 a month. If long-term tracking is your main reason to upgrade, factor that in.
If you’re upgrading mainly for health tracking, set up each cat’s profile with an accurate starting weight and give SmartScale about a week to learn who’s who. Cats within a pound or so of each other can get mixed up, so check the first few days of visits and reassign any that landed on the wrong cat.
Nikki runs six cats through her LR5, including two kittens close in weight, and her Litter-Robot 5 review is the best real-world look at how SmartScale handles a crowded house.
The Case for Keeping Your LR3 a Little Longer
Upgrading isn’t automatically the right call, and a few LR3 owners have good reasons to wait. Three independent owners reported that the LR4’s globe felt noticeably smaller than their LR3’s, with one saying their cats’ backs were brushing the sides.
“My LR3 globe can go 3 months without being gross.” (owner comparing their LR3 and LR4)
Whisker says the LR5 has a slightly larger interior than the LR4, which helps. The honest catch is that nobody has published a measured, side-by-side comparison of the LR3 and LR5 globes yet. So if any of these sound like your cat, measure before you buy:
- A very long or very large cat who already looks snug turning around in the LR3
- A heavy-volume pee-er, like a cat with kidney disease, where litter depth really matters
- A cat with mobility issues, like a tripod or arthritic senior who needs room to turn without stepping in anything
And if you never open the app and don’t care about tracking? Your LR3 is still doing the core job. That’s a perfectly good reason to keep it until it genuinely needs replacing.
If you do upgrade, buy directly from Whisker so you get their in-home trial period, then run the LR5 beside your LR3 for the first few weeks. If your big cat or senior cat struggles in the new globe, you’ll know quickly and still have your old box set up.
How to Switch Without Offending Your Cat
Most cats who already use an LR3 adjust to an LR5 quickly, since the basic shape and motion are familiar. Milo was coming from a regular box, so he was a slower case. He wasn’t scared. He was just very thorough.
He went in right away, then took about a month to use it regularly. I mixed in used litter from his old box, kept the old box out for a few months so he never felt pushed and let him use both for a while. I’m fairly sure the spinning interior slowed him down because he wanted to supervise it…every single time.
What owners say works best:
- Set the LR5 up next to the LR3 so the location doesn’t change at the same time as the box
- Transfer some used litter into the new globe so it smells familiar
- Cycle manually at first or lengthen the delay so the first rotation doesn’t happen while your cat is nearby
- Let the LR3 get a little less pleasant instead of pulling it away on day one
- Give it real time. One owner with a very reluctant cat said it took eight weeks, and it worked
Try not to let a nervous cat watch the very first cycle up close. One owner said that was the mistake that set their adult cat back for weeks. A curious cat like Milo can watch all he wants. A skittish cat should meet the box while it’s sitting still.
Upgrading From an LR3: Pros and Cons
- Much quieter cycling that cats and humans both notice
- Better odor control from the sealed drawer and filter design
- Weight and visit tracking that can flag health changes early
- Pauses when a cat steps up, which ends mid-cycle overload faults
- Fewer drawer emptyings thanks to a larger, smarter drawer
- A real expense when your LR3 may still have years left
- Long-term history needs Whisker+, an ongoing cost
- Globe size vs. LR3 hasn’t been measured publicly, so big cats are a question mark
- SmartScale can confuse cats that are very close in weight
Should You Upgrade? Here’s Who It Makes Sense For
Upgrade to the Litter-Robot 5 if:
- You have a senior cat or a cat with a health condition you want to monitor
- Your LR3 keeps faulting even after a full deep clean
- Noise or smell has started to bug you
- You have three or more cats and you’re emptying the drawer constantly
- You’re facing an expensive repair, like a new base
Keep your Litter-Robot 3 a while longer if:
- It runs reliably and you never use the app
- Your cat is very large and already a snug fit
- The problem you’re having is fixed by a deep clean or an inexpensive part
- You’d rather spread the cost out by repairing first
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Litter-Robot 3 last?
A well-maintained Litter-Robot 3 commonly lasts six to eight years, and some owners report even longer.
- Most long-running units have had a part or two replaced, often the motor or pinch contacts
- Many reported failures turn out to be cleaning issues, not worn-out machines
Is the Litter-Robot 3 still supported?
Partly. Whisker still sells Litter-Robot 3 replacement parts and keeps LR3 support guides online, but it no longer offers an extended warranty for the LR3 and doesn’t do out-of-warranty repairs.
- Parts are on the Litter-Robot parts page, not the main Whisker shop
- Existing warranties remain valid for their original term, which most LR3s are past
- Third-party sellers also carry LR3 filters, liners and seal strips
What’s the biggest difference between the Litter-Robot 3 and Litter-Robot 5?
The Litter-Robot 5 weighs and tracks each cat, while the Litter-Robot 3 has no scale at all.
- The LR5 is also much quieter and has a sealed waste drawer
- It supports up to five cats from 3 to 30 pounds
Does the Litter-Robot 5 work without WiFi or a subscription?
Yes. The Litter-Robot 5 cleans itself without a subscription, and basic weight tracking and visit logs are free in the Whisker app.
- Whisker+ adds long-term history, deeper trends and some LR5 Pro camera features
- Remote features in the app need WiFi on a 2.4 GHz network
Should I get the Litter-Robot EVO or Litter-Robot 5 to replace my LR3?
Choose the EVO if you have one or two cats under 19 pounds and want the closest LR3 replacement. Choose the Litter-Robot 5 for more cats, larger cats or the best health tracking.
- The EVO costs $599; the LR5 costs $799
- The LR5 Pro adds cameras for households with similar-weight cats
Will a big cat fit in the Litter-Robot 5?
The Litter-Robot 5 is rated for cats up to 30 pounds, and Whisker says its interior is roomier than the Litter-Robot 4.
- Weight isn’t the whole story; length and turning room matter more
- Some owners of very large cats find even newer globes snug, so measure first
Is upgrading from an LR3 to an LR5 worth it for a senior cat?
For most senior cats, yes. Weight and visit tracking can flag changes early, and the LR5’s redesigned front is easier for cats with stiff joints.
- Watch for repeated trips with little output, which can signal a urinary emergency
- Talk to your vet about what changes are worth tracking for your cat
What should I do with my old Litter-Robot 3?
Most owners keep it as a backup, pass it to family or sell it locally, since working LR3s still have real value.
- Deep clean it and include the power supply and any spare parts
- A backup unit is handy if your new box ever needs a repair
Final Verdict: Should LR3 Owners Upgrade?
If your Litter-Robot 3 still runs, you don’t owe it a retirement party yet. These machines routinely last six to eight years, you can still buy the parts to fix them yourself and a lot of “it’s broken” moments turn out to be a deep clean waiting to happen.
But if yours is getting loud, fussy or expensive to keep alive, or you’ve got a senior cat you’d like to keep a closer eye on, the Litter-Robot 5 is a genuine upgrade. Not a shinier version of the same thing. It’s quieter, it smells better and it can tell you things about your cat that an LR3 simply can’t.
Milo took his sweet time warming up to ours. He’s now 13, and the data it collects has already earned its spot in the laundry room. If that sounds like your house too, this one earns a solid yes.
