Will My Cat Actually Use the Litter-Robot? What the First Two Weeks Look Like (And What to Do If Your Cat Refuses)

I’ll be honest: the day our Litter-Robot 5 Pro arrived, I was more nervous than Milo was. I’d just spent real money on a litter box that rotates, and I had a vivid mental picture of him taking one look at it and filing a formal complaint with management (if you’re still at the “is this worth the money” stage, here’s what a Litter-Robot really costs over 3 years). Spoiler: it’s a lot friendlier than the price tag suggests.

Spoiler: he wasn’t scared at all. He did his homework, used it within the first few days and then spent the next month treating it like a timeshare. Happy to visit. Not quite ready to commit.

So if you’re asking yourself, will my cat actually use the Litter-Robot, here’s the reassuring part. Whisker estimates that over 95% of cats acclimate, and most start using it within a few days to a week. Plenty go on day one.

This guide walks you through the first two weeks, day by day, so you can tell normal from not-normal. If your cat turns out to be a holdout, the second half covers the fixes that work, cheapest first. And if it never clicks? Whisker’s 90-day trial has your back.

Before You Even Plug It In

Keep your cats out of the room while you set it up.

Here’s the thing nobody mentions in the unboxing videos. According to Whisker’s Litter-Robot 4 manual, the moment you press the power button, it runs an initial clean cycle that lasts about two minutes. Perfectly sensible for a machine. For a cat meeting it for the first time, it’s a bit like being introduced to someone who immediately does a cartwheel.

Reading through owner stories, a surprising number of slow transitions started exactly this way. The cat saw the globe roll before it ever had a chance to sniff it, and that first impression took weeks to undo. So close the door, set it up, run whatever cycles you need, then let the cats in.

After that, leave it switched off for a while. Whisker calls this “semi-automatic” mode: the robot sits there like a regular (very fancy) litter box, and you start a clean cycle by hand once your cat has used it and wandered off.

💡 Pro Tip

Keep the shipping box. Returns under Whisker’s 90-day trial are meant to go back in the original packaging, and the clock starts when your Litter-Robot is delivered. The box is enormous and most of us flatten it by Day 2 (guilty). Stash it in the garage and write your delivery date on the calendar.

The First Two Weeks, Day by Day

Here’s the calendar most cats follow. Yours may skip ahead or linger, and both are fine. Cats haven’t read the schedule, haha.

The one rule that runs through all of it: if a step isn’t working, stay on the previous one a little longer.

Day 0: Setup Day (Cats Not Invited)

Today is about making the Litter-Robot smell familiar and feel safe, with the power off.

  • Leave it switched off. You’ll cycle it by hand for now.
  • Put it right beside the old box. Don’t move or remove the old one.
  • Use the litter your cat already knows (as long as it’s a clumping litter). Change one thing at a time.
  • Add a scoop of used litter from the old box. Whisker recommends this, and it makes the globe smell like home.
  • Take the fence off. Your cat sees the world from much lower down than you do. Without the fence, they can see inside before committing. It goes back on later.
  • Put a few treats on the step. That’s the whole agenda. Seriously.

I mixed a scoop of Milo’s used litter into the globe on Day 0. Not glamorous, but whatever he thought of the robot itself, it smelled like his. I’m convinced that’s what got him through the door so early.

Normal on Day 0: sniffing it, walking away, sitting on top of it, ignoring it completely. Also normal: using it within ten minutes. One shelter cat in the owner stories I read did exactly that.

Days 1 and 2: The Home Inspection

Most cats spend these two days investigating. Milo approached the whole thing like a building inspector with a clipboard.

He circled it. He stretched up on his back legs to check out the top. Then he peered into the globe, slow and very deliberate, like he was looking for structural flaws. No panic, no drama. Just a cat conducting a thorough review.

Your job during the inspection is to reward any interest at all, even a couple of steps in its direction.

  • Treats first, hands later. Don’t pick your cat up and post them through the opening.
  • Keep the power off. If you need to cycle it, do it with the cats behind a closed door.
  • Sit nearby and do nothing. That quiet company is what got the ten-minute shelter cat to wander over and try it.

Normal on Days 1 and 2: plenty of cats have used it by now. Plenty haven’t. Neither tells you much yet.

Litter Robot 5 Pro with Milo looking on

Days 3 and 4: The First Visit (Act Natural)

This is when most cats make their first real visit. Celebrate it (quietly, from across the room) because that’s milestone one.

  • Praise or treat after each use, then taper the treats once the habit forms.
  • A cat who hops in, stands there for two seconds and hops out has made progress. Reward it.
  • Keep the power off. Run a manual cycle once your cat has left the room.

Milo hit milestone one within the first few days. What came after took longer, and that’s the part most guides skip.

Days 5 to 7: The Big Reveal

Once your cat has used it a few times, it’s time to introduce the motion on your terms.

The first time our globe turned, Milo watched with what I can only describe as nervous curiosity. Ears forward, body ready to leave if necessary. But he didn’t bolt. He was sussing it out, figuring out what this thing did and whether it was going to be a problem.

Turns out it wasn’t.

If your cat is a Milo, the confident-cat route will probably work for you. If your cat leaves the room when you open a can of sparkling water, take the slow road.

  • Confident cat: turn it on and run a cycle while your cat watches from a comfortable distance. Talk to them calmly. This is Whisker’s own approach and it works for most cats.
  • Cautious cat: sit with them, run one cycle, hand over a treat, then switch it back off. Repeat once or twice a day until the cycle is boring.

When you switch to automatic mode:

  • Set the cycle delay to the maximum. You can stretch it to 30 minutes, so the globe never starts moving just as your cat walks away.
  • Turn on sleep mode overnight. On the Litter-Robot 4, hold the Cycle button for 3 seconds. The light bar turns purple and the robot won’t cycle on its own for 8 hours. You can also schedule it in the Whisker app.

Normal in week one: a curious cat stepping in mid-cycle to investigate. One owner’s cat interrupted the cycle five to ten times a day at first. The globe pauses when it detects a cat, and the curiosity fades. Eventually, even the most dedicated supervisor gets bored.

Days 8 to 14: The Two-Box Era

Now you’re working on milestone two: turning occasional visits into regular use. Mixed use is completely normal here.

This is the stage Milo lived in for a good while. Some days the Litter-Robot, some days the old box. I never treated it as a setback. And honestly? It wasn’t one.

  • Using both boxes counts as progress, not a halfway house.
  • Make the old box less convenient instead of letting it get gross. Move it behind the Litter-Robot, or into a slightly cramped spot, so the clean robot becomes the easy choice. One owner did exactly this and her cat switched over within a few weeks.
  • Check the height. If your cat keeps choosing the old box, ask whether it’s simply easier to climb into. Prop it up to Litter-Robot height on a couple of litter jugs. One owner’s verdict on their holdout: he was “just lazy.” (Relatable.) Another said this trick ended a two-month standoff.
  • Scoop the old box less often, but keep it clean enough to be hygienic. A cat with no clean option may choose your bath mat.
💡 Pro Tip

Don’t punish the old box. Make the new one easier. Raising the old box, moving it behind the robot or tucking it somewhere a little awkward all work because the Litter-Robot becomes the obvious choice. Your cat still has a clean backup, so nobody panics and goes on the rug.

Day 14: The Checkpoint

By Day 14, most cats fall into one of these rows. Find yours.

Day 14 Checkpoint
If your cat is…What it meansWhat to do next
Using the Litter-Robot every timeYou’re thereRemove one old box, wait three days, then the next.
Using both boxesNormal. Milestone two is in progress.Keep going. Leave the old box available.
Used it a few times, then went back to the old boxNormalStay on the Day 8 to 14 steps and check the box height.
Peeing in one box and pooping in the otherCommon. Plenty of cats like separate spots.Keep going. No action needed.
Hasn’t used it at allYou’re in the minority, not out of optionsHead to the fixes below. You’re well inside your 90 days.

If you’re at Day 14 and it’s still hit and miss, you’re in good company. Milo was right there. It took him about a month before the Litter-Robot was simply his box, and I kept his old one out for a few months after that, just so he never felt pushed.
Was that overkill? Maybe. Did it work? Yes.

What If You Have More Than One Cat?

Milo is an only cat, so my version of this was a one-cat show. For the multi-cat view, I turned to our editor Nikki, who has six cats ranging from kittens to an 11-year-old senior. In her words, her house is “basically an automatic litter box stress test.”

Her experience backs up something I kept seeing in the owner stories: your first cat is the hard one. Nikki’s cats have lived with automatic litter boxes for years. When her Litter-Robot 5 arrived, three of them practically lined up to try it, and all six figured out how to get in and out right away. Cats learn by watching each other. Once one is using it, the rest usually aren’t far behind.

That said, a crowd changes a few things:

  • Keep extra boxes out during the transition. Cats in the same house often go back to back. If the robot is occupied or mid-cycle, the next cat needs somewhere else to go.
  • Expect interrupted cycles. Lots of them. One of Nikki’s younger cats, Nori, has paused hers dozens of times just to see what it’s doing. The globe stops whenever it detects a cat, so that’s the safety system getting a workout, not a problem. A longer cycle delay helps.
  • Play litter box detective for the first week. The Litter-Robot 5 tells cats apart by weight. Nikki watched who went in, then checked the weight on the display afterward to set up each profile. Cats close in weight can still get mixed up now and then, but you can reassign a visit in the app. (The Litter-Robot 5 Pro adds cameras for exactly this.)
  • Find the holdout before you change anything. If accidents start, a camera tells you which cat to work with, so you’re not retraining the whole household.
  • Partial success still counts. If three of your four cats use it, you’re scooping for one.

And one bonus tip from Nikki’s house: the shipping box kept her cats busy for a solid week. Let them enjoy it, then stash it in the garage until your 90 days are up.

What’s Normal, and What’s Worth a Second Look

Most of what worries new owners in the first two weeks is perfectly ordinary cat behavior. Cats are weird. That’s part of the deal.

Normal:

  • Watching cycles from across the room
  • Stepping in mid-cycle (the globe pauses)
  • Napping beside it, on it or even in it
  • Using both boxes for weeks
  • Using the robot for one job and the old box for the other

Worth a second look:

  • Fear that spreads to other things in the house
  • Straining, crying or going much more often
  • Peeing on beds, rugs or laundry
  • A cat who was using it happily and suddenly stops

If your cat is going outside any box, check with your vet before blaming the robot. Urinary infections, bladder crystals, and arthritis can all cause litter box avoidance, and all three can look a lot like “my cat hates the new box.”

Cat Won’t Use the Litter-Robot? Figure Out Which Problem You Have

If you’re reading this section, your cat may not be having it. Don’t panic, and don’t start changing everything at once.

Refusal has several different causes, and some need opposite fixes. Spend five minutes on the diagnosis first. Future you will be grateful.

Why Is My Cat Refusing?
What you’re seeingLikely causeWhere to start
Bolts when it moves, won’t take treats near itFearRestart from Day 0 with the power off
Sniffs, hesitates on the step, won’t commitShaky entryA sturdier ramp (see below)

Refusal started right after a litter changeLitter textureGo back to the old litter

A cat who used it happily suddenly stopsPossibly medicalVet first, then everything else

No amount of treats will fix a space problem, and a cat in pain isn’t being difficult. Get the cause right and the fix is usually simple.

Refusal Fixes, Cheapest First

Start at the top. Most of these cost nothing and take minutes, which is my favorite kind of fix.

Free Fixes to Try Today

  • Raise the old box. Level it with the Litter-Robot so the robot is no harder to get into. This one has the best success stories of anything here.
  • Move the old box behind the robot. Your cat has to walk past the clean Litter-Robot to reach it.
  • Take the fence off. Better visibility, easier entry.
  • Play with the light. Two owners found opposite fixes for the exact same problem, which might be the most cat thing I’ve ever read. One shone a flashlight into the globe so her cat could see inside, and the cat used it a few hours later. Another switched the night light off because his cat refused while it was on. Try both.
  • Restart from Day 0. Power off, old box back beside it, treats on the step. Restarting costs nothing.
  • Max cycle delay plus sleep mode. Fewer surprises, especially at night.
  • Put some of your cat’s waste in the globe. Not the most glamorous tip in this article, but it tells them exactly where the bathroom is.
  • Deep clean the globe. A fresh-smelling robot beats a well-used old box.

To turn off the night light on a Litter-Robot 4: hold the Reset button for 3 seconds, tap it until one green light shows (that’s “always off”), then hold it for 3 seconds again to save. On the Litter-Robot 5, the night light setting is in the Whisker app.

Low-Cost Fixes

  • A sturdier ramp. Cats won’t commit their weight to a step that wobbles or shifts. Would you? Several experienced owners, including one who has transitioned 14 adult cats, swap the included step for a heavy ramp like the Pet Gear One Step. If you buy a third-party ramp, check that it has an open back so it fits over the step. Whisker also makes a ramp for the Litter-Robot 4.
  • Litter attractant. Whisker suggests it when you hit an impasse. Dr. Elsey’s Cat Attract is the one owners mention most.
  • Catnip or silvervine near the unit. A small weekly dose builds a good association.
  • Enzyme cleaner on any accident spots. Leftover scent keeps drawing cats back to the wrong place.
  • A camera, if you have several cats. Figure out which one is the holdout before you change anything. (It’s always the one you least suspect.)
💡 Pro Tip

Added a ramp? Press Reset. After installing the Litter-Robot 4 ramp, Whisker’s instructions say to press the Reset button to zero the weight sensors. It takes two seconds and keeps the robot detecting your cat properly during the weeks you most need it predictable.

Hands-On Fixes (Confident Cats Only)

  • Set your cat gently inside and reward even two seconds of standing there.
  • One owner carried her cat over right at bathroom time and moved his paw in a digging motion. He got the idea. (Bless him.)

If your cat is fearful, skip this section. Placing a scared cat in the globe usually makes things worse.

Turning the Motor Back On After a Scare

If your cat uses it happily with the power off but bolts the second it moves, rebuild slowly, distance first. Think of it as earning back their trust one cycle at a time.

  1. Wait until your cat has used it reliably for about five days in a row.
  2. Set the maximum cycle delay and turn on sleep mode.
  3. Run manual cycles from another room with the door closed, for a few days.
  4. Then run them in the same room, as far from your cat as possible.
  5. Toss treats before you start the cycle, not during, so you never have to walk toward a nervous cat.
  6. Move a little closer every few days while your cat stays relaxed.
  7. Switch to automatic once a same-room cycle is a non-event.
  8. If your cat backslides, drop back one step. Not to the beginning.
💡 Pro Tip

Can’t get near a nervous cat during a cycle? A remote treat dispenser lets you reward calm behavior from across the room, so the reward never depends on you walking over.

Special Situations

Multiple Cats

Your first cat is the hardest one you’ll ever transition. Owners consistently report that new cats copy the residents. One owner’s second cat started using the Litter-Robot a few days after arriving, simply by watching her sister. Peer pressure, but make it useful.

During the transition, keep extra boxes out. Cats in the same house often go back to back, and a queue at the bathroom door is a recipe for accidents.

Senior Cats

Older cats have to step into the globe and turn around, which is harder with stiff joints or fading eyesight. A ramp helps, and so does leaving the night light on if your senior seems unsure in dim light.

If a senior can’t manage it at all, keep a low-entry box nearby. Here’s the silver lining: it stays cleaner for them because the other cats are using the robot.

Kittens

Kittens need to weigh at least 3 pounds to use the Litter-Robot 5, Litter-Robot 4 or EVO in automatic mode, because the weight sensor won’t detect anything lighter. Under 3 pounds, leave it switched off and cycle it by hand when your kitten isn’t inside.

The upside: kittens who grow up with one rarely need a transition at all. To them, a litter box that spins is just how litter boxes work.

The Cat Who Suddenly Stops

If an established user suddenly refuses, see your vet first. Then look for anything that changed: a cycle that startled them, a ramp that shifted, a new litter. Once you’ve ruled out health issues, restart from Day 0.

A Trip Coming Up

Don’t try to rush the transition before you leave. Keep the old box out, ask your sitter to scoop it and pick up where you left off when you’re home. Your cat will not hold it against you. (Probably.)

The Mistakes That Set Cats Back

Almost every rough transition story I read included at least one of these. No judgment. We’ve all been tempted to rush a cat.

  • Removing the old box too early. This is the single most common mistake. A few good days feel like victory, the old box disappears and the cat chooses the front hall instead.
  • Letting your cat watch the first cycle. See the cartwheel warning above.
  • Forcing a nervous cat inside. Treats and patience first, hands later.
  • Changing the litter at the same time. One owner’s cat refused until they went back to their usual litter. Then she used it right away.
  • Scolding accidents. I get it. Finding a surprise by the front door at 6 a.m. would test anyone’s patience. But cats don’t connect a scolding with something that happened an hour ago, and the stress makes avoidance worse.

Keeping Milo’s old box out for months felt like overkill at the time. It wasn’t. He never had a reason to feel cornered, and the switch stuck.

If It Just Isn’t Clicking: The 90-Day Safety Net

Nobody buys a Litter-Robot planning to send it back. Still, it’s nice to know where the exit is.

First, a reality check: partial success still counts. If two of your three cats use the Litter-Robot, you’re scooping for one cat instead of three. Owners whose holdout never fully converted still called that a win, and it is.

Keep going if:

  • Your cat is entering it, standing in it or using it now and then
  • Any fear is easing over time
  • You’re still well inside the 90 days

Reassess if:

  • Your cat is going on soft furnishings or in several spots
  • The fear is spreading beyond the robot
  • You notice any medical signs (see your vet)

How the 90-day trial works:

  • Bought directly from Whisker? You can return it within 90 days of receipt for a full refund. You pay return shipping.
  • Bought from another retailer? Their return policy applies, so check it before you buy.
  • Get a return authorization (RMA) number first through your Whisker account. Returns sent without one aren’t refunded.
  • Clean it before it goes back. Empty the globe and the waste drawer and wipe both down. Units returned dirty can be charged a $75 cleaning fee.
  • Shipping: use your own carrier, or Whisker can provide a FedEx label for $60 deducted from your refund. Shipping from outside the contiguous 48 states may cost more.
  • Refund timing: processed within 7 to 10 business days of Whisker receiving it, and your bank may take up to 30 days to post it.

That said, give it the full runway before you decide. Ninety days is a long time in cat years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take a cat to get used to a Litter-Robot?

Most cats use a Litter-Robot within a few days to a week, and Whisker estimates over 95% of cats acclimate.

  • First use often happens between Day 1 and Day 4.
  • Regular, every-time use can take a few weeks.
  • Some cats need several weeks or more, which the 90-day trial comfortably covers.

Should I keep my old litter box when I get a Litter-Robot?

Yes. Keep the old box right beside the Litter-Robot until your cat uses the robot every time, then remove boxes one at a time.

  • Removing it early is the most common cause of accidents.
  • Make it less convenient rather than letting it get dirty.

Does the Litter-Robot cycle when I first plug it in?

Yes. Whisker’s Litter-Robot 4 manual says it runs an initial clean cycle of about two minutes when you power it on.

  • Keep your cats in another room during setup.
  • Then leave it switched off while your cat adjusts.

My cat used the Litter-Robot once and then went back to the old box. Is that normal?

Yes, completely. First use and regular use are two different milestones, and the second one can take a few weeks.

  • Keep the old box available and keep going with the Day 8 to 14 steps.
  • Check whether the old box is simply easier to climb into.

Can I leave the Litter-Robot switched off while my cat adjusts?

Yes. Whisker recommends leaving it off in “semi-automatic” mode during acclimation and starting clean cycles by hand.

  • Cycle it when your cat isn’t in the room.
  • Switch to automatic once your cat uses it regularly.

Is the Litter-Robot safe for kittens?

Yes, once they weigh at least 3 pounds for automatic mode on the Litter-Robot 5, Litter-Robot 4, and EVO.

  • Under 3 pounds, leave it off and cycle by hand.
  • Kittens raised with one usually need no transition.

Can multiple cats share a Litter-Robot during the transition?

Yes, but keep extra boxes out during the transition. Cats often go back-to-back, and the newest cat may need a backup.

  • The Litter-Robot 5 is rated for up to 5 cats once everyone has adjusted.
  • Later cats often learn by watching the first one.

Will a senior cat use a Litter-Robot?

Many do, especially with a ramp and a little extra patience.

  • Stiff joints and weaker eyesight can make the entry and turnaround harder.
  • Keep a low-entry box nearby if your senior struggles.

Does the Litter-Robot work without the app or Wi-Fi?

Yes. The Litter-Robot 4 runs from its control panel buttons, including power, manual cycles, sleep mode and night light settings.

  • The Whisker app adds remote control, alerts and usage history.

What if my cat never uses the Litter-Robot?

It happens to a small minority, and Whisker’s 90-day trial lets you return a unit bought directly from them for a full refund, minus return shipping.

  • Partial success (some cats using it) can still be worth keeping.
  • Rule out medical issues with your vet first.

Final Thoughts

Most cats get there faster than their owners expect. The ones who don’t usually just need the old box left alone a little longer, and someone patient on the other side of the door.

Milo’s version went like this: a very thorough inspection, an early first visit, about a month in the two-box era and then one day it was just his box. No drama, no standoff. He simply got there on his own schedule.

Picky cats don’t lie, and neither do slow ones. Milo took his time, and that turned out to be the whole point.

Bottom line: watch for milestone one, be patient through milestone two and keep the shipping box until you’re sure. And if you need a finish line to picture, one owner said it best. Now when he tells his cat he’s a good boy, the cat hops straight into the Litter-Robot.
