Most people measure the spot for their Litter-Robot and forget about the drawer. It slides out the front, and in a small room that’s often where the couch or a desk chair is.
If you’re working out where to put a Litter-Robot in a small apartment, the spec sheet only tells you half the story. You also need room to open it and empty it, a floor that keeps the scale accurate and a noise level you can live with three feet away.
I’ll be upfront. I don’t live in an apartment. But our family lives in the upstairs half of our house, which is roughly the size of a two-bedroom unit, and Milo’s Litter-Robot 5 Pro lives in the den. That room is also our workout corner, my daughter Noelle’s study space while she works through the Licensed Dental Assistant program at college and, when my Dad comes to visit, a guest room with a pull-out bed.
One room, four jobs and Milo’s bathroom. That’s the small-space puzzle in a nutshell.
So I got down on the floor with a tape measure (and a decibel app) and measured what this thing actually needs. Here’s what I found, plus what to know about floors, noise and where not to put it.
One owner’s litter stopped sticking the week they moved the robot to a different room. The room matters more than most people think.

The 30-Second Answer: Where Should a Litter-Robot Go?
Put your Litter-Robot on a firm, level floor in a cool, dry spot, with breathing room on every side and enough clear floor in front to pull the drawer all the way out. Here’s the short version:
Five things your Litter-Robot's new spot needs. Tick all five and you're set.

How Much Space Does a Litter-Robot Actually Need?
A Litter-Robot 5 Pro covers about 22 by 27 inches of floor. The space it needs to actually work in is closer to two feet wide by four and a half feet deep, because the drawer slides out the front and the bonnet tips back when you open it.

Litter-Robot Sizes at a Glance

What I Measured in Our Den
These numbers come from Milo’s Litter-Robot 5 Pro, in the room where it actually lives.
- Drawer pulled out: about 17.5 inches past the front of the base.
- Gap to the back wall: about 9 inches, which gives the bonnet room to tip back when I open it.
- Height with the bonnet open: about 33 inches.
- Power cord: about 6 feet. Whisker recommends plugging it straight into the wall, so pick your spot within 6 feet of an outlet.
Real numbers from Milo's Litter-Robot 5 Pro, in the room where it actually lives.
Add it up and you get roughly 54 inches of floor depth: 9 inches behind, 27 inches of robot and about 18 inches of drawer. Plan for a strip of floor about two feet wide and four and a half feet deep, with nothing lower than about three feet hanging over it.
And leave space for you to kneel when you empty the drawer, which nobody plans for until their knee meets a bookshelf.
Whisker doesn’t publish a minimum clearance number. Its setup guide says to keep the unit off the walls and out of corners, and those 9 inches are simply what works for opening the bonnet in our den. I push mine back closer to the wall when in operation.
Before you commit to a spot, mark it on the floor with painter’s tape: the base, the drawer pulled all the way out and a few inches behind. Then sit down in front of it like you’re emptying the drawer. If your elbow hits the radiator, better to find out now.

Is the Litter-Robot EVO Better for Small Apartments?
If you have one or two cats and very little floor, the EVO is the model to look at first. It’s Whisker’s most compact Litter-Robot at 20.6 by 24.3 inches and 27.6 inches tall, which is about the footprint of a regular covered litter box.
Our editor Nikki covered it in depth in her Litter-Robot EVO review, including the trade-offs that come with the smaller size.
- You have one or two cats and want the smallest Litter-Robot footprint
- It's going in a tight spot like a bathroom, closet or small corner
- Your cats are under 19 lb, which is the EVO's rated limit
- You want the lowest Litter-Robot price at $599
- You have three or more cats, since the EVO tops out at two
- Your cat is long or big, because 14.5 inches of headroom is snug
- You want waste detection, which only the Litter-Robot 5 line has
- You'd rather empty the drawer less often than its smaller drawer allows
Where to Put a Litter-Robot: Room by Room
A cool, dry, low-traffic spot with decent airflow beats a perfectly hidden one. Here’s how the usual small-home options shake out.
- Bathroom: handy and easy to clean around, but humidity is the trade-off. Damp air makes clumps stickier and smells linger. If it goes here, run the fan after showers and leave the door open a crack.
- Bedroom or studio corner: very doable with sleep mode scheduled overnight. Keep it as far from the bed as your outlet allows.
- Living room: works well if you angle the entrance so your cat hops out toward a wall instead of a walkway, and a white unit hides litter dust much better than black.
- Closet: only with the door off or wide open. A closed closet traps heat and moisture, which is a recipe for sticky litter and smell.
- Laundry nook: often a great spot. Just keep it clear of the dryer vent and the water heater.
- A shared room: this is our den. Milo’s robot sits along one wall a few steps from the desk, out of the walkway.
Milo doesn’t care that Noelle is studying for a dental assisting exam next to his bathroom. And so far, she hasn’t complained about him either.
Where You Put It Changes How Well It Works
The room you pick can affect how well your Litter-Robot cycles, and not just how it looks in the space.
One owner moved theirs into a west-facing, three-season sunroom. Litter started sticking to the liner and the cycles got unreliable. They tried different litters and nothing helped. When the robot moved back to the laundry room, the sticking stopped within the week.
“I believe having it in a room that is a little too warm was causing the problems.” (Litter-Robot owner on Reddit)
That lines up with Whisker’s own manuals, which tell owners to reduce exposure to high temperature and humidity. A few related spots to avoid:
- Heat registers and air returns. They push litter box smell around the whole home.
- Sun-facing windows. Direct sun can warm up the unit and the litter, which makes clumps stickier.
- Wi-Fi dead zones. Closets, basements and far corners can drop the connection, which means no app alerts or remote cycling. Check your phone’s Wi-Fi bars in that exact spot first. The Litter-Robot 5 connects on 2.4 GHz.
If your litter suddenly starts sticking and nothing else has changed, look at the room before you buy a new bag. A new sunny window, a heat vent or a humid summer can be the real cause.
Carpet or Hard Floor? What Your Floor Does to the Scale
Your floor matters mostly because of the scale. Every visit, your Litter-Robot weighs your cat, and a squishy or tilted base can throw that number off. Since the weight data is half the reason to own one, this is worth getting right.
- Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro: they have an integrated carpet tray, so they work on hard floors or carpet.
- Litter-Robot 4: on carpet thicker than about 1/8 inch, Whisker recommends its Carpet Tray accessory. After you set it down, press Reset so the scale zeros out again.
- Litter mats: put them in front of the unit or completely under it. Never halfway under. A mat under two feet and not the others tilts the whole base.
Owners who skip this end up with confusing readings, like a kitten that “weighs” 4 pounds in the morning and 8 by lunch. If your numbers jump around, check the floor before you worry about your cat.
Our den is carpeted, so I tucked a piece of vinyl flooring completely under Milo’s robot and a little past the front. The LR5 handles carpet fine on its own. I added the vinyl so any litter that falls off Milo’s feet is easy to sweep up instead of getting stuck in the carpet.
On carpet, a leftover piece of vinyl plank or a hard floor protector under the whole unit turns stray litter into a quick sweep. Make sure it sits fully under all four feet so the base stays level.

How Loud Is a Litter-Robot? My Real Noise Readings
It’s quiet. I held my phone exactly three feet away during a cleaning cycle, while the globe turned and dropped waste into the drawer, and it sat right around 40 dB for most of the cycle. The loudest moment, when the waste fell into the drawer peaked at 53.1 dB.
For context, about 40 dB is a quiet library, and the low 50s are a steady rain on a window. Honestly, it’s quieter than I expected. Most of the time the loudest part is the litter shifting around inside the globe.

An independent test of the older Litter-Robot 3 measured an average of 60 to 62 dB with peaks near 65, though they held their meter closer (about 20 inches), so it isn’t a perfect apples-to-apples comparison. Still, the difference is easy to hear in real life.
For studios and bedrooms, two app settings do most of the work:
- Sleep mode: schedule quiet hours so it won’t cycle while you sleep.
- Cycle delay: a longer wait means fewer surprise cycles while you’re nearby, and it gives clumps time to firm up.
Keeping Smell Under Control in a Small Space
In a small space, smell control mostly comes down to three things: the carbon filter, how full you let the drawer get and the air around the box.
- Use smell as your filter reminder. One owner put it perfectly: when you start smelling poop, it’s time to change the filter. No schedule to remember.
- Empty the drawer around half full. Waiting for “full” is when smells creep out.
- Keep it simple. Milo uses Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal, and I sprinkle a little baking soda in the drawer liner. Cheap, easy and it works for us.
- Pick an air purifier with real activated carbon if you want one nearby. A HEPA filter on its own mostly catches dust, not odor.
- Run a manual cycle from the app if a fresh deposit is perfuming the room before the delay ends.

Can You Hide a Litter-Robot in a Cabinet?
Yes. Whisker makes two pieces of furniture sized for its robots, and both fit any Litter-Robot model.
| Feature | Litter-Robot Cabinet | Litter-Robot Credenza |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Tighter floor space | Extra storage, or a TV on top |
| Size | 35.43″ W x 27″ D x 36.18″ H | 51.34″ W x 27″ D x 36.18″ H |
| LitterHopper | Compatible | Compatible |
| Ramps | Not compatible with any ramp | Litter-Robot 4 Ramp only |
| Key limitation | No ramp option for senior cats | Takes a full wall |
| Price (USD) | Check Whisker | From about $599 |
Before you tuck it away, think about how you’ll open it. The LR5 Pro needs about 33 inches of height with the bonnet up, and both pieces stand 36.18 inches tall on the outside. You’ll also want airflow, since a closed box traps the same heat and humidity that cause sticky litter. And if your senior cat needs a ramp, check compatibility first.
Small-Space Mistakes I’d Avoid
These are the placement mistakes I’d avoid in a small space.
- Wedging it into a corner. It needs a little room on every side, and the bonnet needs room to tip back.
- Boxing in the exit to stop scatter. Cats jump out instead of stepping out, and jumping is exactly what flings litter. Angle the exit toward a wall instead.
- A black unit in a shared room. Owners say every speck of litter dust shows. One described their black LR4 as “now grey.” If dust bothers you, go white.
- Pulling the old litter box on day one. Milo took about a month to use his Litter-Robot regularly, and his old box stayed out for a few months. In a small space, plan floor room for both during the switch.
- A mat halfway under. It tilts the base and scrambles your cat’s weight data.
Litter-Robot 5 Pro in a Small Space: Pros and Cons
- Quiet in a shared room: about 40 dB for most of a cycle, three feet away
- Works on carpet thanks to the built-in carpet tray
- Sleep mode and cycle delay make bedroom and studio spots realistic
- White finish hides litter dust in a living space
- Weight and visit tracking without giving up floor space to a second box
- Needs about 4.5 ft of floor depth once you count the drawer and wall gap
- About 33 inches of height to open the bonnet, so no low shelves
- 6 ft cord limits spots far from an outlet
- Can’t sit flush in a corner, which costs a few inches in tight rooms

Litter-Robot Placement FAQ
How much space does a Litter-Robot need in an apartment?
A Litter-Robot 5 Pro needs about 2 feet wide by 4.5 feet deep of working space, plus about 33 inches of height with the bonnet open.
- The base itself is about 22 by 27 inches
- The drawer slides out about 17.5 inches
- Leave a few inches behind so the bonnet can tip back
Which Litter-Robot is best for a small apartment?
The Litter-Robot EVO is the smallest, at 20.6 by 24.3 inches and 27.6 inches tall.
- Best for one or two cats under 19 lb
- Multi-cat homes or big cats usually do better with the Litter-Robot 5
Can I put a Litter-Robot on carpet?
Yes. The Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro have a built-in carpet tray.
- Litter-Robot 4 owners on carpet thicker than about 1/8 inch should use the Carpet Tray, then press Reset
- A level base keeps weight readings accurate
- A hard panel fully under the unit makes stray litter easy to sweep
Is a Litter-Robot loud enough to bother a roommate or a light sleeper?
Most people won’t notice it. My Litter-Robot 5 Pro stayed around 40 dB three feet away for most of a cycle and peaked at 53.
- Schedule sleep mode for nighttime
- A longer cycle delay means fewer cycles while you’re nearby
Can a Litter-Robot go in a closet or bathroom?
Yes, as long as there’s airflow and room to open it.
- Closed closets trap heat and moisture
- In bathrooms, run the fan after showers
- Leave room for the drawer and the bonnet
Can I plug a Litter-Robot into a power strip or extension cord?
Whisker recommends plugging the power supply straight into a wall outlet.
- The LR5 Pro cord is about 6 feet, so pick a spot within that reach
- Choose the outlet first, then the corner
Does a Litter-Robot need to be near my Wi-Fi router?
It needs a decent Wi-Fi signal for app alerts, tracking and remote controls.
- The Litter-Robot 5 uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
- Check your phone’s signal in the exact spot first
Final Thoughts: A Little Planning Goes a Long Way
A Litter-Robot is happy in a small home as long as it gets the right few square feet: level, cool and dry, with a little breathing room behind and enough space in front to pull the drawer out without moving furniture.
Milo’s corner of the den proves you can share a room with one and barely notice. He’s 13, he has his quiet spot, and the rest of us get on with workouts and dental assisting flashcards around him.
If your space is tight, measure twice, tape it out once and let the robot handle the scooping. That’s a setup that earns a solid yes from both of us.
