Pretty Litter Review: A Cleaner, Smarter Way to Care for Your Cat

How often to change cat litter pretty litter
Written by Nicole Etolen

Let’s be honest—keeping tabs on your cat’s health isn’t always easy, especially if you have a multi-cat household like I do. Between daily routines, sneaky hiding spots, and cats’ tendency to mask illness, it’s easy to miss early warning signs. That’s where  Pretty Litter  comes into play.

This isn’t just your average cat litter—it’s a health-monitoring tool plus a super lightweight, easy-to-use odor-controlling litter in one. Let’s start with a quick overview of what it is and how it works. Then we’ll get into the pros, cons, and more.

PrettyLitter Cat Litter Health Monitoring Litter

PrettyLitter is a smart, lightweight cat litter with absorbent crystals that trap odors and eliminate moisture. It changes color to monitor your cat's health, detecting issues like UTIs. What Is Pretty Litter?

Pretty Litter is a subscription-based health-monitoring cat litter made from silica crystals that changes color based on the pH level of your cat’s urine. While it doesn’t replace a vet visit, it gives you a heads-up if something seems off—like early signs of a UTI, bladder crystals, or metabolic issues.

What Do the Pretty Litter Colors Mean?

Here’s what those colors can mean:

  • 🟡 Yellow/Olive Green: Urine is within the normal range.
  • 🔵 Blue: Alkaline urine, which can be linked to urinary tract infections or stone formation.
  • 🟠 Orange: Acidic urine, possibly a sign of metabolic acidosis or kidney tubular acidosis.
  • 🔴 Red: May indicate the presence of blood—could signal bladder crystals or more serious urinary tract conditions.

I can’t stress this enough: Pretty Litter isn’t a diagnostic tool. It also does not replace regular vet visits.

That said, it is a nifty early warning system, especially if your cat is the kind to silently suffer in the corner until things get serious. If the color changes to blue or orange and doesn’t go back to yellow within a day or so, it’s definitely time to call the vet. If it’s red, don’t delay. While red doesn’t 100% always mean that your cat is peeing blood, it’s definitely better to be safe than sorry.

How We Tested Pretty Litter

Before we get started, I just want to really quickly give you an overview of how I tested Pretty Litter. I actually did it from three different perspectives.

For how well it works with indoor cats, I mostly relied on my brother and sister-in-law since I use self-cleaning litter boxes in the house. They use Pretty Litter exclusively in their litter boxes (like the top-entry box pictured below). My brother is a lawyer, and my sister-in-law teaches elementary school. My niece and nephew are very active in extracurricular activities. Plus, they travel frequently. Long story short, they’re extremely busy people, always on the go. They love Pretty Litter because it’s so easy and convenient.

I also put some in a very small litter pan inside that we use when my senior cat Alex has vestibular episodes. Basically, he gets very dizzy, wanders aimlessly bumping into things and has to be contained in a “corral” for his safety. You’ll see what I mean by the small litter pan in the pics throughout this post. The cat, however, is not Alex. It’s Lily, a nosy kitty who doesn’t let me take pictures without her “assistance.” No complaints here, though. Pictures are always better with a cute kitty in them!

Last, we have a colony of feral/stray cats, including two kittens that we’re working on preparing to go to a forever home when they’re old enough. Part of that includes litter training them. We keep a litter box outside in a covered area near their shelter. It’s protected from direct rain, but it still gets humid here during the summer. Pretty Litter is coming in super handy for that because it doesn’t get all soggy the way clumping litter does when it’s moist outside.

Now that we have all of that out of the way, let’s talk about everything that makes Pretty Litter so awesome.

Our Real-World Pretty Litter Review: What We Loved & What We’d Change

From its iconic health-monitoring features to its amazing odor control, these are the things we love most about Pretty Litter.

Pretty Litter Pros and Cons at a Glance

PrettyLitter: Quick Pros & Cons

✅ Pros
  • Health-monitoring silica crystals with clear color indicators
  • Strong odor control that traps moisture rather than masking
  • Lightweight, low-dust crystals that are easy to pour and maintain
❌ Cons
  • × Cats may need a short adjustment period when switching from clay
  • × Main formula is non-clumping, so not ideal for most automatic boxes
  • × Subscription pricing can feel higher than basic clay litters

Excellent Odor Control

This is my favorite feature! One of the first things I noticed about Pretty Litter is how well it handles odors, especially with multiple cats. Let’s be real: even one cat’s litter box can get funky fast if the litter isn’t doing its job. Multiply that by five, and you’ve got a potential stink bomb waiting to happen.

Pretty Litter uses silica crystals that don’t just cover up smells—they actually trap and neutralize moisture on contact. That means odors aren’t just masked temporarily with perfumes; they’re absorbed and locked away. I’ve tested plenty of litters over the years that claimed to control odor, only to find myself changing the box constantly or burning through air fresheners. Pretty Litter genuinely makes a difference. Even when you walk into the room first thing in the morning, you’re not hit with that typical “cat box” smell.

What I especially appreciate is that the crystals stay drier longer. Since you’re not scooping out clumps of wet litter every day (like with clay), the moisture evaporates gradually, and the box stays fresher between changes. Just scoop the solids and give the litter a stir each day. It’s quick, easy, and most importantly—effective.

If odor control is high on your priority list (and let’s be honest, when isn’t it?), Pretty Litter is definitely worth a try. It’s one of the few litters I’ve used that lives up to the hype in this department.

Lightweight & Dust-Free

If you’ve ever dragged a 30-pound box of clay litter up a flight of stairs, you’ll appreciate this one immediately—Pretty Litter is so much lighter than traditional cat litters. In fact, it’s about 80% lighter than most clumping clay options. Each bag weighs just a few pounds but still lasts about a month per cat. That’s a big deal if you’re managing multiple litter boxes.

Aside from being a lot easier on your back, Pretty Litter is also refreshingly low-dust. One of the biggest issues I’ve had with traditional litters is the cloud of dust that explodes every time I pour it into the box. That dust doesn’t just make a mess—it can also irritate your cat’s lungs (and yours), especially if anyone in your household has allergies or respiratory issues.

Pretty Litter’s silica crystals pour cleanly with almost no airborne debris. I barely notice any dust at all, even when I stir the litter around during daily cleanings. That makes a big difference in terms of cleanliness and air quality—especially in smaller spaces like apartments, where the litter box might be tucked into a closet or bathroom.

If your cat tends to sneeze around dusty clay litter, or if you’re just tired of wiping down dusty shelves every time you refresh the box, this is a major win.

Health Monitoring, Made Easy

We already covered it above, so I won’t repeat myself much here. If you have one cat (or multiple cats who never use the same box), this is definitely one of the top reasons to choose Pretty Litter over other subscription cat litters

For those of us with multiple cats, it still offers peace of mind when you see nothing but yellow. If you do happen to see an off color, it’s still a good clue that one of your cats needs attention.

Convenient Monthly Delivery

We’ll talk about this in a bit more detail below, so I’ll keep it simple for now. Pretty Litter ships directly to your door each month, and you can adjust your subscription based on how many cats you have. No more last-minute runs to the store when you realize you’re out of litter.

Bonus – It comes in a box. We all know how much cats love boxes!

A Few Things to Consider

As with all things in life, there are a few small drawbacks.

Cats may need to get used to it

Since we don’t use anything else with the outdoor cats, they don’t really know that other types of litter exist. However, if your cats are used to clay-based litter, it may take some work to get them switched over to Pretty Litter. Then again, it may not.

I’ve used crystal-based litter before when I still had traditional litter boxes, and my cats really didn’t seem to mind it at all. My brother’s cats were shelter rescues who were used to “traditional” litter and they didn’t have a problem transitioning over, either.

The only cat I personally know (well, at least know the owner, I haven’t met the cat yet) that had an issue is my neighbor’s cat. She wanted to switch to crystal litter and her kitty hated it. She just mixed it in slowly. Kind of like how you transition a cat to a new food. She started with ¼ crystal and 3/4th clay, then half and half, and so on.

Pretty Litter Review

It’s Non-Clumping

The main Pretty Litter formula is non-clumping, which means it won’t work in automatic litter boxes. They do offer a clumping version, but I haven’t had a chance to try that out yet, so I can’t really speak to how well it works.

How Much Does Pretty Litter Cost?

Pretty Litter starts at $24 per month for one cat for both the original unscented version and the newer Lotus scented litter. That drops to $22 when you order more bags and includes free expedited shipping.

Each bag is designed to last one cat about a month. If you have more than one cat, you’ll need more than one bag (yes, even if they’re all using the same litter box).  You can easily scale your subscription, though.

They offer the choice between a standard monthly subscription and an “Extra Odor Control” subscription with 3-week intervals. You can change, cancel or pause your subscription anytime, and they’re pretty flexible if you need to tweak your delivery schedule.

FAQS about Pretty Litter

Is Pretty Litter safe for cats?

Yes. Pretty Litter is made from amorphous silica gel, a non-toxic material that won’t swell if ingested. It was developed with veterinarians and scientists specifically for cats, and is considered safe for daily use.

Is Pretty Litter compostable?

No. Because Pretty Litter is a silica-based crystal litter, it’s not compostable or biodegradable. It shouldn’t be added to compost piles.

Is Pretty Litter dust-free?

Pretty Litter is marketed as “99% dust-free” thanks to its larger silica crystals that generate minimal dust compared to clay litters. That said, a small handful of Pretty Litter Reviews do mention that there is a slight bit of dust when pouring.

Can I flush Pretty Litter?

No, it is not safe to flush. Honestly, even cat litter advertised as “flushable” really shouldn’t be flushed. It’ll mess up your plumbing (especially if you have a septic system), for one thing. Plus, cat waste can carry harmful bacteria or parasites. If that ends up in our water supply or on crops, it can pose serious health risks to both people and animals.

Final Thoughts: Is Pretty Litter Worth It?

In my opinion, absolutely. The peace of mind alone is worth the price. In a single-cat household, Pretty Litter’s color-changing feature helps catch issues you might otherwise miss. Even in a multi-cat household it offers enough benefits to make it worthwhile. It’s clean, easy to use, lightweight, and genuinely helps reduce odor.

That said, it may not be the perfect match for every cat or every home. If your feline friend is super picky about litter texture or you’re devoted to clumping clay, Pretty Litter’s regular formula might not be ideal. In that case, you may want to check out our list of the best clumping cat litters. But if you’re looking for a smarter, simpler way to care for your cat’s health—this might just be the best litter you’ll ever scoop.

  • This was the worst litter I have ever used! And when my 75 year old mother tried to cancel her subscription they ignored her and continued to charge her and send more. After I found out I called myself and they denied her refund! I then had to cancel her credit card! This is a horrible company!

  • Having more than one cat can be quite expensive when you have to completely change out the old with new monthly. I’m looking at $60+ per month. I am hesitant to try this out because of the cost factor.

  • I am beyond thrilled with Pretty Litter. I gave my neighbor a bag and she is just a amazed as I am.

  • NOT as advertised. We have three cats- all of whom prefer to use the same extra large pan. So we use two 8 pound bags to give a 3.5 inch depth (more than recommended on the bag). It is scooped and mixed twice a day. After 7 to 8 days the litter’s ability to absorb liquid lessens quickly and you end up with a big pool of liquid at the bottom of the pan. After 10 days TOPS this stuff is useless. At $50.00 for two bags at Target it ends up costing a whopping $150 per month (or more)— just for cat litter. Insane

  • Would give zero stars. I tried this for my two cats and it was way too smelly before it was supposed to be. Also the kitty litter is everywhere around the house. I find it too expensive for what it is. The worse part is that it is really hard to cancel. There is very little customer service and it can take days of back and forth for them to agree to cancel your subscription. You can’t just call and talk to someone, it has to be done through email or text. After they had stated that they’d cancelled my subscription, they charged my credit card again and shipped another box of kitty litter. They refuse to refund the money until they get the litter back but are not responding to emails to follow up about the shipping tags they were supposed to have sent. I ended up canceling my card and getting a new one so that they don’t charge me again next month. I would avoid this company and their horrible service.

    • I have nothing bad to say about them. I had to cancel my subscription because I have 4 cats, at it gets too expensive for me every month. I went to their site, and a chat window came up and I explained what my situation was and I canceled it right away, no hassle. Representative just asked me for my info and that was it…less than 5 minutes. Maybe try it this way.
