Self-cleaning litter boxes have changed the way many cat owners manage daily cleanup, offering more convenience, better hygiene, and less hands-on scooping. Over the years, I’ve tested a wide range of automatic litter boxes, from budget-friendly models to higher-end options, and the differences in performance can be significant.
As JoAnna Pendergrass, DVM explains, “For cost-conscious cat parents, it can be tempting to purchase the least expensive litter box. However, these cheaper litter boxes may not perform as well as you’d expect. It may be worth it, in the long run, to invest in a higher-priced self-cleaning litter box that suits your and your cat’s needs.” That insight closely mirrors my own experience after trying multiple brands, including entry-level options and more advanced models like Litter-Robot, PETKIT, and CatLink.
Some automatic litter boxes live up to their promises. Others don’t. This guide focuses on the ones that actually perform well in real homes, based on hands-on testing, long-term use, and feedback from other cat owners.

What Is an Automatic Litter Box?
An automatic litter box (also called a self-cleaning litter box) is a powered litter box that removes waste for you after your cat uses it. Instead of scooping manually, the box runs a timed cleaning cycle—triggered by sensors or an app—to separate clumps and solid waste from clean litter, then drops the waste into a sealed drawer or tray.
Most models work best with clumping litter, and the biggest benefits are less daily scooping, better odor control (because waste is removed faster), and a cleaner litter bed for your cat. The main trade-offs are higher upfront cost, ongoing supplies (liners/filters for some models), and the need for occasional deep cleaning and sensor maintenance.
5 Best Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes in 2026 Based On Consumer Ratings, Reports and Personal Experience
Our picks are based on hands-on testing, real-world use, and verified owner feedback—not just specs or marketing claims. Each automatic litter box was evaluated for how well it actually works in everyday homes.
We focused on:
- Cleaning reliability and consistency
- Cat comfort and ease of adaptation
- Odor control over multiple days
- Smart features and app usability
- Size, noise level, and home fit
- Ongoing maintenance and overall value
We also reviewed feedback from cat owner communities and forums, removing products with repeated safety issues, poor durability, or weak customer support—even if they were popular or heavily advertised.
Litter-Robot 5 (and 5 Pro) Automatic Litter Box

The Litter-Robot 5 takes everything people already liked about the earlier generations and refines it into something that feels more polished, quieter, and easier to live with day to day. After testing a lot of self-cleaning litter boxes over the years, that’s honestly what stands out most here. It doesn’t feel like a company reinventing the wheel just to slap a new number on the box. It feels like they actually paid attention to how people use these things in real homes.
We tested the Litter-Robot 5 Pro version specifically, but both models are stellar. The Pro mainly adds a few extra convenience and smart-home style upgrades, while the core litter box experience itself remains excellent across the lineup.
What immediately stood out to me with the Litter-Robot 5 is how much smoother the entire experience feels. The cleaning cycles are quieter, the movement is less mechanical-sounding, and the waste drawer does a noticeably better job controlling odors between emptying sessions. It feels less like a gadget you constantly monitor and more like an appliance that quietly handles its job in the background.
The maintenance improvements are also surprisingly meaningful in real life. Deep cleaning access is easier, litter buildup is reduced in some of the usual trouble spots, and the overall system feels more refined and less finicky over time. Those little quality-of-life changes add up quickly when you’re dealing with something cats use multiple times a day.
Safety is still one of Whisker’s strongest areas. The sensor system pauses immediately if a cat approaches or decides mid-cycle is somehow the ideal time to investigate. (Because naturally, at least one cat always decides the rotating globe must be personally inspected.) The app experience also remains one of the better ones in this category, with reliable notifications, waste tracking, and remote controls that actually work consistently.
Of course, it’s still a large automatic litter box, and the price reflects that. This isn’t the budget-friendly “maybe I’ll try automation someday” option. But if you want something that’s engineered well, handles multi-cat life reliably, and genuinely cuts down on daily litter maintenance, the Litter-Robot 5 absolutely earns its place near the top of the category.

HomerunPET Self-Cleaning Litter Box CS106

The HomerunPET Self-Cleaning Litter Box CS106 doesn’t try to be the smallest or flashiest option in the room. It knows exactly what it is, and that’s kind of the point. This one is built for space, stability, and serious capacity. If you’ve ever looked at a standard automatic litter box and thought, “There is no way my cat is comfortably turning around in there,” this is the model that answers that concern.
It’s marketed as the largest self-cleaning litter box available, and honestly, after testing a lot of these things, that claim holds up. The interior feels open instead of cramped, the waste drawer is massive, and the overall build is solid in a way that inspires confidence. It’s less about sleek minimalism and more about practical function for real-life, multi-cat households.
Let’s start with what makes the HomerunPET CS106 different. This thing is big. Not “looks big in photos” big, but actually roomy inside. The 106L dome gives cats real space to turn around, dig, and do their business without feeling like they’re in an airplane lavatory. If you have a larger cat, or multiple cats rotating through the same box all day, that extra interior space makes a noticeable difference.

The 12L waste drawer is just as impressive. In multi-cat homes, tiny drawers defeat the whole point of automation because you’re still emptying constantly. This one gives you breathing room. Pair that with the auto-refill system, which automatically tops off litter when levels drop too low, and you end up with a setup that’s genuinely more hands-off than most competitors. You can adjust the sensitivity in the app, or turn it off entirely if you prefer to manage things manually.
Safety is another strong point. The CS106 uses a radar sensor near the entrance plus weight sensors in the base, so if a cat approaches mid-cycle, it stops immediately. The dome never fully seals shut either, leaving a built-in anti-pinch gap. It’s quiet, too, rated around 38.8 dB. In real life, that translates to soft litter movement, not mechanical drama.

That said, it’s not a minimalist’s dream. At 44 pounds, it’s heavier than most automatic boxes, and the footprint is slightly larger. The entrance is a bit high for some seniors (a small step solves that), and swapping the internal filter requires reaching fairly deep into the unit. The app setup can also take an extra minute or two if it doesn’t auto-detect right away.
Still, if your priority is space, stability, and fewer maintenance sessions, the trade-offs feel reasonable. This isn’t trying to be the smallest option on the shelf. It’s trying to handle real-life, multi-cat use without constant babysitting, and on that front, it delivers.
The HomerunPET CS106 is one of the largest automatic litter boxes I’ve tested, with a roomy 106L dome and oversized 12L waste bin. Designed for big cats and real multi-cat homes, it also features an auto-refill system, ultra-quiet operation, and strong safety sensors. If you want a more hands-off litter setup, this one delivers.

PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin

The ScoopFree SmartSpin Self-Cleaning Litter Box is a sleek, modern solution for cat owners looking to upgrade their litter box experience. This model stands out for its excellent odor control, achieved through a sealed waste bin and integrated deodorizer that effectively keeps unwanted smells at bay. The app integration, which tracks your cat’s weight and litter box usage, adds an extra layer of peace of mind by offering real-time insights into your pet’s health.
I found the setup process to be straightforward, and the instructions were clear, thanks to the QR code instructions that made it easy to follow along. The entire assembly process took me about 25 minutes, which included a few moments for me to take photos and admire the aesthetically pleasing design. The faux wood legs not only add a touch of style but also blended seamlessly with my home decor. I also appreciated that the packaging was environmentally friendly, with no Styrofoam, and all the parts fit together smoothly without any hiccups.

One of the standout features of the SmartSpin is its quiet operation. The motor produces a very low hum during the cleaning cycle, which didn’t seem to bother my cat at all. In fact, the design is so sleek and unobtrusive that it quickly became a new favorite spot for my cat to simply sit and observe.
The waste drawer, which holds up to two weeks of clumps and waste, is easy to remove and dispose of, making maintenance a breeze. Plus, the option to use any clumping litter is a big win in my book, as it allowed me to continue using my preferred brand without any issues.
Another huge advantage of the ScoopFree SmartSpin is its price point. At $399, it offers a host of features typically found in much more expensive models. Many high-end automatic litter boxes can easily run upwards of $600 or more, making the SmartSpin an affordable yet feature-rich alternative. It’s an excellent middle ground for pet parents who want the benefits of automated cleaning without breaking the bank.
However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. While the litter box is ideal for most cats, it may be a bit challenging for older cats to use due to its elevated design – but to be fair, this is the case for many of the automatic litter boxes. A senior cat with arthritis may find it difficult to climb into. Additionally, while the app setup was quick and the connectivity reliable, it does require a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection, which some may find inconvenient.

Another point to note is the ongoing cost of the deodorizers, which they suggest should be replaced every two weeks. At $14.95 per pack of two, this could add up over time, potentially making it a bit pricey for some. Also, while the odor control is generally excellent, I did start to notice a faint smell around the 8-9 day mark if the waste bin hadn’t been emptied.
Despite these minor drawbacks, the ScoopFree SmartSpin is a solid contender in the self-cleaning litter box market. Its combination of ease of use, aesthetics, and effective odor control features make it a great option for cat owners who are looking to simplify their lives. If you’re in the market for a stylish, tech-savvy litter box that offers real value for the price, the SmartSpin is definitely worth considering.
The ScoopFree® SmartSpin™ Self-Cleaning Litter Box sifts and seals waste with 4x better odor control, keeping your home fresher. The PetSafe® SmartSpin™ app tracks your cat's weight and litter box usage, providing valuable health insights. Its sleek, low-profile design ensures a fresh litter bed after each use, making it ideal for busy, multi-cat households.

Neakasa M1 Lite

The Neakasa M1 Lite Open-Top Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box takes a very different approach from most automatic litter boxes, and honestly, that’s exactly why it stands out. Instead of shoving cats into a futuristic little pod that looks vaguely like a spaceship toilet, the M1 Lite keeps things open and familiar. It feels much closer to a traditional litter box, just with the enormous benefit of not having to scoop it yourself every day.
That open-top design ends up solving a lot of the complaints people have about self-cleaning boxes in general. Larger cats have room to move comfortably, nervous cats don’t feel trapped, and transitioning from a regular litter box tends to be much smoother. It’s one of those designs that feels obvious once you actually use it.
What really impressed me with the M1 Lite is how balanced the whole experience feels. The cleaning cycle is quick and surprisingly quiet, the waste drawer seals odors far better than I expected from an open-top unit, and the app actually adds useful functionality instead of feeling like a gimmick somebody bolted on at the last minute.
The safety system also deserves credit. With six infrared sensors and four weight sensors, it reacts immediately if a cat approaches or hops back in during a cycle. (Naturally, Leia tested this within approximately five minutes of setup because cats consider “safety testing” part of their job description.) The unit paused instantly every time.
I also appreciate how easy the day-to-day maintenance is. The “pull and wrap” waste system keeps cleanup simple, topping off litter takes seconds, and there’s no wrestling with giant domes or awkward lids. After weeks of use in a multi-cat home, it’s stayed impressively clean, odor-controlled, and reliable.
The trade-offs are fairly reasonable. It does need clumping litter, the footprint isn’t tiny, and open-top designs naturally allow a little more litter scatter than fully enclosed models. But if your cats hate cramped automatic boxes, or you’ve been struggling to find something comfortable for larger cats, the M1 Lite solves a lot of real-world problems without overcomplicating things.
The Neakasa M1 Lite is an open-top self-cleaning litter box designed for comfort, safety, and low-maintenance living. With automatic waste removal, strong odor control, and app monitoring, it’s a great fit for multi-cat and large-cat homes.
Petkit PuraMax 2
The Petkit PuraMax 2 is one of those litter boxes that quietly sneaks up on you—in a good way. It might not have the same instant name recognition as the Litter-Robot, but don’t let that fool you. This smart litter box has quite a few tricks up its sleeve, especially if you’re looking for a sleek, high-tech option that doesn’t take up as much space (or cash).
Let’s start with the basics. The PuraMax 2 is a fully automatic self-cleaning litter box that connects to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi. You can control just about everything from the Petkit app—cleaning cycles, odor control settings, and even real-time updates on your cat’s bathroom habits. Yup, it tracks weight, visit duration, and frequency. It’s kind of like a fitness tracker for your cat’s litter box routine.

Where the PuraMax 2 really shines is in the odor control department. It uses a combo of a sealed waste bin, a deodorizing gel pack, and an optional spray feature to keep everything smelling fresh. Most users say it holds up surprisingly well, even in homes with multiple cats. Bonus points for the fact that it runs quietly—you won’t hear the thing whirring away in the middle of your Zoom meeting.
Setup is straightforward, and the app pairing is smooth. In fact, several reviewers noted that it’s easier to get going than some of the bigger-name competitors. The drum is generously sized, and while it’s not tiny, it’s still a better fit for smaller spaces than some of the bulkier options out there.
Of course, it’s not all purrs and roses. A few users have run into sensor hiccups, like the box thinking a cat is inside when it’s not, which can delay cleaning cycles. And while most of the design kinks from the original version seem to have been worked out, some still say the waste drawer liners could fit a little more snugly.

That said, for the price—especially when it’s on sale—the PuraMax 2 is a solid contender. It’s reliable, easy to use, and packed with thoughtful features. If you’re not quite ready to drop premium money on a Litter-Robot but still want something that feels smart and modern, this one’s definitely worth checking out.
Say goodbye to frequent cleaning and leakage worries with Petkit PuraMax 2 Self Cleaning Cat Litter Box, the ultimate litter box for multi-cat households. The sealed cylinder and advanced triple deodorization ensure a hygienic and safe experience for your feline friends. Plus, you’ll like how odor is controlled for your enjoyment. With a spacious interior and innovative xSecure structure, this litter box is designed to make maintenance a breeze. Low entry point and is designed to accommodate all kitties, no matter their age or size.
PetSnowy SNOW+ Self-Cleaning Litter Box

If you’ve been on the hunt for a stylish, tech-savvy self-cleaning litter box that doesn’t look like it belongs in a spaceship (but still kinda acts like one), PetSnowy might just be your new favorite find. Sleek, modern, and thoughtfully designed, this automatic litter box is made with both cats and their humans in mind. From the ultra-quiet cleaning cycle to the easy-to-remove waste drawer, PetSnowy packs in all the smart features without overcomplicating things.
Features:
- Effortless Setup – Simply lift the top cover, add fresh litter, and let SNOW+ do the rest! This self-cleaning cat litter box automatically scoops, collects, and seals waste in its PetSnowy liners.
- Effortless Cleanup – No assembly required and easy to disassemble without tools.
- No Tracking – The anti-tracking walkway minimizes mess, providing a spotless home 24/7. Ideal for cat parents with limited mobility.
- Effortless Safety – Equipped with 6 stages of SnowSafe+ protection. The cleaning process pauses immediately when your cat enters, ensuring safety.
- Effortless Health Tracker – Remotely monitor your cat’s litter habits from your smartphone. With the SNOW+ app, you can adjust settings and view usage records from anywhere.
- Timely Support – PetSnowy provides high-quality products backed by responsive after-sales support. Their team is ready to resolve concerns to ensure 100% satisfaction.
The PetSnowy SNOW+ is positioned at a similar price point to other top automatic cat litter boxes like the Litter-Robot 4 and Leo’s Loo Too.
Given the advanced features and high-quality construction, the higher cost may be justified. While it may excel in self-cleaning capabilities and odor control, it’s essential to weigh this investment against other options. I recommend researching thoroughly to ensure it aligns with your needs and budget.
Product specs include a dimension of 29.5 x 20 x 25.6 inches, a waste drawer capacity of 2.9 cubic feet, and a peak noise level of 53dB—equivalent to a quiet office. The 2.6-gallon waste drawer can handle up to two weeks of cat waste.

Magnetic tool-free assembly makes setup and cleaning easy, though some claims in the product description may be misleading. For instance, phrases like “world’s most trusted smart care innovator” feel exaggerated, given the established brands in the cat tech space. Nonetheless, the PetSnowy SNOW+ boasts several noteworthy features.
Zero Smell Experience Feature The “Zero smell experience” feature with 3-stage deodorization technology sounds promising, though odor control effectiveness can vary with usage. PetSnowy claims it eliminates 90% of ammonia odors, though there may be recurring expenses if the system requires periodic replacement.
Auto-Sealing Draw Waster The auto-sealing waste drawer offers unique functionality, but it requires PetSnowy-specific bags, priced at $39.99 for 30. This may lead to additional expenses compared to models like the Litter-Robot 4, which can use regular garbage bags.
Curved Walkway: The Curved Walkway aims to reduce litter tracking, though the enclosed design may be a drawback for larger or more claustrophobic cats. PetSnowy suggests it accommodates cats up to 20 lbs, though I’m cautious about comfort for cats over 15 lbs.

The PetSnowy SNOW+ app enables remote health tracking, though this is standard in many automatic litter boxes. It’s a helpful feature but doesn’t particularly stand out.
One notable limitation is its one-year warranty and a 30-day return policy, which may not inspire confidence compared to competitors like the Litter-Robot 4, which offers a 90-day return and a three-year warranty.
PetSnowy keeps your cat’s litter area clean with a self-packing system that automatically traps odors and dust. The anti-tracking curved walkway ensures litter stays put, while the magnetic assembly design provides easy setup and stability. Control daily cleanings or full litter changes effortlessly with just a tap on your phone.

Popular Automatic Cat Litter Boxes – Honorable Mentions
As a cat owner who has tested various self-cleaning litter boxes on the market, I feel it’s important to mention other popular options available and some pros and cons to each.
CATLINK Scooper Luxury Pro-X Self-Cleaning Litter Box

You may have noticed we added a brand-new contender to our list of favorite self-cleaning litter boxes – the CATLINK Scooper Luxury Pro-X Self-Cleaning Litter Box. While the older version of the CATLINK Automatic Litter Box (review below) didn’t quite make it into the original top five, the latest version has quickly caught our attention. After thoroughly testing it, I’m excited to include it on this list for cat parents who want in-depth insights and a sophisticated design. Keep reading to find out why CATLINK deserves a spot in your home.
The CATLINK Scooper Luxury Pro-X Self-Cleaning Litter Box brings a premium edge to your cat-care routine. It offers an app-based system that not only alerts you when waste needs emptying but also helps track weight and usage for up to four felines. In my multi-cat household, it was the first automatic litter box to accurately distinguish between two cats that weigh almost the same. Let’s dive a bit deeper into the features and my overall experience.
I found the assembly process refreshingly simple—just plug it in, pop in the included waste bag, and you’re good to go. From start to finish, it took me less than 20 minutes, which included time spent tinkering with the app. The sleek, modern shape also surprised me with how well it fit in a smaller corner of my room. If you have limited space, the Pro-X’s footprint is on par with other high-end boxes like Leo’s Loo Too.
CATLINK Scooper Luxury Pro-X Litter Box Setup & Assembly
One of the standout features is the multi-cat tracking. Using sensitive weight sensors, the Pro-X recognizes each cat’s unique weight profile and logs it in the CATLINK app. Although the first day was a bit hit-or-miss while it “learned” each cat, by day two it was regularly identifying who used the box and how often. This data—which also includes things like how much litter you have left and the humidity inside the box—can provide valuable insights into your cat’s overall health.

How to connect the box to the CATLINK app
The enclosed waste drawer features a Triple Odor Removal system, which is great for controlling unwanted smells. In my tests, odor never became an issue as long as I emptied the drawer about once a week (for one cat, it can last even longer). However, the entrance is a bit higher than some of the other boxes on my list—something to keep in mind if you have a senior cat. I recommend adding the optional ramp (or a small stool) to make entry easier, especially for older or arthritic kitties.
When it comes to drawbacks, the biggest hiccup for me was the initial Wi-Fi setup. You’ll need to hold down two specific buttons for about 15–20 seconds to get the box into pairing mode; it wasn’t super intuitive at first. That said, once everything was connected, the app worked reliably without dropping the signal. Price-wise, it’s a little steep compared to a standard litter box—but compared to other high-end automatic models, it’s fairly competitive.

Despite these minor bumps in the road, the CATLINK Scooper Luxury Pro-X stands out for multi-cat households that want a smart, data-driven solution. If you’re looking for a high-tech litter box that can track each cat’s bathroom habits (and weight fluctuations), the Pro-X just might be the perfect fit.
The CATLINK Self-Cleaning Litter Box Pro-X is a high-tech, app-enabled solution for hassle-free cat care. With automated cleaning, odor control, and multi-cat tracking, it keeps your home fresh and tidy while saving you time. Perfect for modern cat parents seeking convenience and cleanliness in one sleek, innovative package.
Litter-Robot 3 Self-Cleaning Litter Box
Without a doubt, Litter-Robot 3 was the #1 self-cleaning litter box in the industry and the top choice for all cat owners until Whisker released Litter-Robot 4. I used Litter-Robot 3 for five years before upgrading to Litter-Robot 4!

It’s still one of the best robotic litter boxes for multiple cats on the market and it’s still available for purchase on the official website at a cheaper price point.
I have a few cats at home. I’ve been using the Litter-Robot 3 for years and I could not be happier. It was expensive but I can say it was my best investment ever and my only regret was that I didn’t buy it sooner!
Litter-Robot 3 is exactly what its name suggests. The efficiency and convenience of this self-cleaning litter box have significantly simplified my daily pet care routine, particularly in handling cat poop, which is always a challenge for any cat owner. It literally looks like a badass robot ready to wage war on errant cat litter and funky-smelling cat urine.
Besides price, I especially love these things about Litter-Robot compared to other robotic litter boxes in the list:
- A 90-day free trial is an amazing feature for such an expensive device. It did not work for my friend’s very large Bengal cat and she simply returned it in 90 days when she decided that the Litter-Robot didn’t work for her and her cat. I shared that story in my full length Litter-Robot 3 review.
- It comes with 18-month warranty that you can easily extend. If anything happens, they have a superior support team that replies very fast. The replacement parts are cheap compared to other scoop-free cat litter boxes on the list.
- Extremely reliable. I have been using this litter box for over five years for my cats so it works constantly. Nothing has ever gone wrong or broken in all that time (and I had the extended warranty just in case).
- Sleek design. It’s a matter of personal preference but I love it.
There are also so many other features I love about this cat litter box. First and foremost it is an automatic, self-cleaning litter box that cleans easily and is scoop free. It has a unique automatic MoonGlo NiteLite that is a cool blue LED that is both great for the ambiance and lends the unit a unique futuristic look. It also automatically tells you that its waste collection bin is full, and has a self-adjusting cat sensor for your cat’s ease in usage. And true to its name, the Litter-Robot 3 has an “Open Air” large upward-facing entry that is suitable for all cat sizes.

You might also notice from the name that the Litter-Robot 3 is the third iteration of the highly successful Litter-Robot platform and it shows that Whisker continues to make improvements on their products.
Aside from automatically sifting waste out of the litter, a little above five minutes after using it, the Litter-Robot 3 also has a larger more ergonomic entry. It has a self-adjusting cat sensor that automatically adjusts to accommodate different sizes of cats.
Of all the more modern self-cleaning litter boxes featured here, the Litter-Robot 3 is easier to set up, considering its “Techy feel.” The top globe and bottom anchor unit are easy to put together: just plug it in, pour on some litter and you are set to go. It does not use any fancy receptacles or special waste bags, the Litter-Robot needs only regular everyday garbage bags.
It does not even need any special type of cat litter. It can work with any commercially available clumping litter from any brand.
The Litter-Robot 3 has its own carbon filter that you can insert under the corner of the lip drawer for odor control.
More than anything else, and aside from its apparent simple and effective operational use, the Litter-Robot 3, is hands down, the most unique and futuristic looking on this list. It is easily in the top three in terms of looks and effectiveness. Plus, the 18-month warranty feature is something special when you purchase from the official website. Read our full review for Litter-Robot 3.
If you choose between Litter-Robot 3 and Litter-Robot 4 self-cleaning litter boxes, Litter-Robot 4 is an updated version of the Litter-Robot 3 with features such as odor control, a larger waste drawer, quieter operation, enhanced software, and Wi-Fi connectivity. However, it is more expensive than Litter-Robot 3, and choosing between the two depends on individual preferences and needs.
Upgrade your litter box® and stop scooping cat litter forever while giving your kitty a clean bed of litter for each use: a better litter box for everyone! Litter-Robot comes with a 90-day in-home trial, comprehensive coverage with our WhiskerCare™ 1-Year Warranty, and free shipping (excl. AK, HI, PR). Since 2000, 1 million happy pet parents have upgraded to the Litter-Robot!
Leo’s Loo Too Automatic Self-cleaning Cat Litter Box
Leo’s Loo Too Automatic Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box is a new product from Casa Leo that my fellow cat owners are raving about.
As an expert cat gadgets reviewer, I must attest that Leo’s Loo Too smart litter box exceeded my expectations. Its sifting technology operates at a quiet 30 decibels, making it easy for felines to adapt to while maintaining a sleek design that would even fit in my living room.
I personally fell in love with the Leo’s Loo Too Automatic Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box due to its impressive features. First, I appreciated the convenience of being able to control the device remotely through the Casa Leo app. The app also allowed me to keep track of my cat’s activity and trend logs, which was incredibly helpful.

I was also pleased to discover that the device can be linked with Alexa or Google Voice Assistant, adding an extra layer of convenience to my experience. Safety was also a top priority for me, and the three-layer protection system of the Leo’s Loo Too ensured my cat was always secure within the litter box.
The programmable UV light for disinfecting and odor control improvement was another standout feature that I loved. Not only did it ensure that the litter box was always clean and fresh-smelling, it also added an extra layer of hygiene that was important to me.

The Leo’s Loo Too also has a larger drawer capacity compared to the original Leo’s Loo, which made maintenance a lot easier for me. Additionally, the whisper-quiet sifting technology was impressive, and the device had a noise level of only 30 decibels, making it incredibly discreet.
The modern and innovative design was also a huge plus for me. It added a touch of elegance to my home and blended in perfectly with my decor. Lastly, the device was incredibly easy to disassemble, making cleaning a breeze.

Overall, it’s comparable to the Litter-Robot cat litter boxes. However I find it slightly too small for my Bengal cat.
Check my full review here! I was truly impressed with this automatic cat litter box. I’m happy to see that Litter-Robot has a proper competitor now.
Compared to Leo’s Loo Too Automatic Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box, Litter-Robot 4 offers advanced features such as a carbon filter system for odor control, larger capacity, quieter operation, enhanced software, and Wi-Fi connectivity, making it a slightly better choice for some cat owners.

CatGenie A.I. Washing Self Flushing Cat Litter Box
The CatGenie A.I. Washing Self-Flushing Cat Litter Box is a unique automatic cat litter box on the market that has both impressed and divided cat owners. While it has received some controversial reviews, I give credit to the CatGenie team for creating such an innovative solution for cats.

One of the standout features of the CatGenie is that it is the only self-washing cat litter box currently available. As a cat owner, I know how difficult it can be to keep a litter box clean and odor-free, so having a device that takes care of this task is truly impressive.
While some may have had mixed experiences with the CatGenie, I appreciate the effort that went into creating this smart cat litter box. The technology behind the device is quite advanced, and it requires a lot of testing and fine-tuning to get it right.
The CatGenie Cat Box comes with its own CatGenie SaniSolution SmartCartridge and one box of their own CatGenie Washable Granules. Take note of these two items because they are potential dealbreakers for the CatGenie Cat Box. Most users found the SaniSolution SmartCartridge and the Washable Granules either an annoyance or a blessing.

Some think that the litter box is a great working and effective product, which is a winning pair for self-cleaning litter boxes. Others found it annoying that the CatGenie Cat Box works only with the specific CatGenie SaniSolution SmartCartridge and CatGenie Washable Granules some users, based on their locations, have had difficulty with the availability of the cartridge and granules.
Common customer complaints about the CatGenie A.I. Washing Self-Flushing Cat Litter Box include noise during the cleaning cycle, plumbing issues, high cost, large size, and potential issues with a cat’s adaptability to the system.

Unlike the other automatic litter boxes on this list, CatGenie Cat Box needs a little more work in its initial set up, but these can be expected especially if you see the actual unit itself and how it operates.
It has a four-step function: scoop, wash, flush, and dry. When the CatGenie Cat Box reaches its programmed time, it will first deploy its built-in scooper by extending it out from its storage straining and separating the cat poop from the sand. This will then be dumped into a built-in bin. Next, it will turn and wash the remaining CatGenie Washable Granules to remove the remaining bits of cat poop.

Essentially ,your automatic litter box will become a small washing machine, washing the CatGenie Granules in the CatGenie SaniSolution. After a thorough wash, it will then flush the entire system out, including the cat poop it has collected down your drain pipe. The final step of the process for the CatGenie Cat Box is drying out the remaining CatGenie Washable Granules, not only to remove water but to help sanitize the granules and keep the whole CatGenie Cat Box warm and sanitary, ready for the next cat user.
The CatGenie Cat Box is quite large, measuring approximately 24.5 inches long, 19.2 inches wide and 21 inches high, It weighs around 25 pounds.

Keep in mind, you will have recurring expenses with CatGenie A.I. such as fresh scent cartridges and washable granules.
Overall, while the CatGenie A.I. Washing Self Flushing Cat Litter Box may not be for everyone, I believe it’s worth considering if you’re looking for a unique and innovative solution for maintaining your cat’s litter box. It’s important to note that proper installation is crucial for optimal performance. This includes connecting the device to your toilet and ensuring that you have enough space in your washroom to accommodate it.

PETKIT Pura X (and original Pura Max) Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box
PETKIT Pura X is an app controlled self-cleaning cat litter box that is good for multi-cat households.

What I love the most about this smart cat litter box is that it is compatible with several types of cat litters, such as plant litters, mixed litters, and bentonite clay litters.
It features the following sensors listed below which not all self-cleaning cat litter boxes have:
- Proximity Sensor – strategically placed at the entrance of Pura X that stops the moment your cat approaches the litter box.
- Infrared Sensors – two infrared sensors also placed strategically on both sides of the entrance that stop working when your cat tries entering the litter box.
- Weight Sensors – four weight sensors placed at the bottom of the drum that stop working the moment the drum senses any changes in the weight.
- Anti-Pinch Infrared Sensors – 12 of these sensors placed in the drum itself that stop working once your cat enters the litter box.
PETKIT Pura X also features remote alerts, which is their accident protection system that sends messages directly to your smartphone in case the litter box detects any emergencies. This is something one would want to have in a smart device like this. The automatic litter box also features odor removal that is a result of PETKIT’s independently researched and developed purifying liquid; one of the most effective odor-removing technologies there is for litter boxes.
From my personal experience and expertise, the PETKIT Pura X Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box has some notable drawbacks that pet owners should consider. However, they have a modified version Pura Max:

While the self-cleaning function is meant to reduce manual cleaning, I found that frequent cleaning was still required.
Additionally, the litter box’s limited capacity may not be sufficient for households with multiple cats or heavy usage.

Furthermore, the motorized cleaning process can be quite noisy and startle cats or disturb owners who are sensitive to noise.
Finally, the learning curve of the litter box may take some time for cats to adapt to, which can be challenging for some pet owners.
Overall, this litter box does seem to be a decent innovative cat litter box to use. You can also see what people who purchased it on Amazon love about it. You can also check the official website.
Catlink Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box (Old Model)

The Catlink is an AI self-cleaning litter box that was released in 2022. While it has some appealing features, it did not make it to my top 5 list due to some potential downsides and limitations.
What I liked most about this litter box was the double odor removal with an activated carbon filter inside the waste drawer. You also have the option to purchase a rechargeable odor purifier. The bin was spacious and could fit one average-sized cat comfortably. It also had three types of sensors built for the safety of feline companions.

Setting up the litter box was easy, and all the necessary accessories, including a user manual, filters, and a waste drawer roll liner, were included. However, the litter tended to clump, requiring more frequent cleaning and taking up more time.
One significant downside of this litter box was the customer support. I had trouble reaching out to customer support to resolve issues with the device. While it may not be a dealbreaker for some, it’s important to keep in mind when considering this product.
The Catlink self-cleaning cat litter box also comes in a luxury pro version that has smart features like the ability to connect to an app. However, I find it a little bit overpriced when considering the features and the fact that there are superior or similar options available for a better price.

Want Smart Health Tracking Without a Robot Litter Box?
Self-cleaning litter boxes get a lot of attention for convenience, but they’re not the only way to add smart tech to your cat’s bathroom setup.
If you’re using a traditional litter box—or even a simple covered box—and want deeper insight into your cat’s health, Petivity’s Smart Litter Box Monitor is worth a look.
Instead of cleaning automatically, Petivity focuses on what’s happening inside the box: tracking weight changes, visit frequency, and bathroom habits for each cat in multi-cat homes. It slides under compatible standard litter boxes and works behind the scenes, no scooping robots required.
Why it’s different
- Tracks weight & bathroom patterns
- Identifies individual cats in multi-cat homes
- Works with standard litter boxes
- No rotating drums, motors, or learning curves
It won’t replace a self-cleaning litter box—but for the right household, it can be just as valuable.
Gain insights about your furry friend’s well-being with the Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor System. Easy to use, the Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor System goes under your purring pal’s litterbox, then just connect to WIFI and sync to the app, and it’s ready to go.

Frequently Asked Questions About Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes
Are self-cleaning litter boxes safe for cats?
Yes, modern self-cleaning litter boxes are generally safe for cats when used properly. Most reputable models include multiple safety sensors that pause cleaning if a cat enters or shifts inside the box. Not all designs are equal, though, and safety features vary by brand. It’s best to choose a model with proven safety systems and allow cats to adjust gradually, especially kittens, seniors, or nervous cats.
Which self-cleaning litter boxes work best for multiple cats?
Self-cleaning litter boxes with larger interiors and bigger waste drawers work best for multiple cats. These designs handle frequent use more effectively and help control odor throughout the day. Smaller or compact models may work short-term but usually require more frequent emptying. For multi-cat households, space and waste capacity matter more than extra app features.
Do automatic litter boxes actually help with odor, or is that marketing?
Automatic litter boxes can reduce odor significantly by removing waste quickly, which prevents smells from building up. The most effective models combine frequent cleaning cycles with sealed waste drawers and quality clumping litter. Deodorizers alone are usually not enough. Real odor control depends more on waste removal timing than added fragrance or filters.
What size cat is too big for a self-cleaning litter box?
There isn’t a strict weight limit, but interior space is more important than a cat’s weight alone. Larger or long-bodied cats often feel cramped in smaller or enclosed self-cleaning litter boxes. If a cat can’t comfortably turn around or dig, they may avoid using the box. Roomy interiors and wide openings are essential for larger cats.
How often do self-cleaning litter boxes need deep cleaning?
Even with automatic scooping, most self-cleaning litter boxes still need a deep clean every 3–6 weeks. This typically includes emptying the unit, wiping down interior surfaces, and washing removable parts. Daily scooping is eliminated, but regular maintenance is still required. Consistent deep cleaning helps control odor and extends the life of the machine.
The Round-Up Of The Best Self Automatic Litter Boxes for Cats

Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, something compact for small spaces, or a fully loaded tech-forward model with all the bells and whistles, there’s truly something on this list for everyone.
That said, if we had to crown a single standout, the Litter-Robot 4 takes the top spot. With its cutting-edge features, sleek design, and years of proven performance (not to mention Whisker’s 25-year legacy), it’s simply hard to beat.
Still, every litter box featured here earned its place for a reason. Each one offers a solid solution to make your life a little easier and your home a lot fresher. Whichever model you choose, you’re taking a big step toward less scooping and more peace of mind—something every cat parent can appreciate.

I’ve had 3 replacements of my LR3 base and 1 (needless) replacement of the globe—all for destroyed electronics. Finally one tech asked whether I have a cat who pees upward—yes, 1 of my 2 (females) sometimes does. The tech said that LR3 doesn’t work for those cats. So, I’ve been trying to figure out whether the redesigned LR4 still has a seamed globe. Do you know? Excited to see that Leo’s Loo advertises a seamless globe.
Oh wow, that’s an unusual case. I guess your only option for automatic litter box is Lavviebot S but I find it overpriced.
